What's new

West Bengal names a new airport in the name of BD national poet

Is this Nazrul guy any good? Have never heard about any of his literary works.
@LaBong?

You may get many information about Kazi nazrul Islam from the Internet. He was one of the two most capable poet/writer of the middle 20th century Bengali literature.

He wrote more than 2600 songs. Love songs, gazals, Urdu songs, Hindu religious songs, Islamic songs and others. As with his lyrics, the melody of no one song of his resembles the melody of any other of his songs.

He wrote most of his songs when he worked in Calcutta Radio. His main job there was to teach the young singers. He wrote most of his 4,000 songs during this short 10 year span of time.

Nazrul is known as bidrohi kobi(rebel poet) in Bengal and was jailed by British for his patriotic poems. His life in old days was very sad.

From wiki -

Nazrul also was shaken by the death of Rabindranath Tagore on 8 August 1941. He spontaneously composed two poems in Tagore's memory, one of which, "Rabihara" (loss of Rabi or without Rabi) was broadcast on the All India Radio. Within months, Nazrul himself fell seriously ill and gradually began losing his power of speech. His behaviour became erratic, and spending recklessly, he fell into financial difficulties. In spite of her own illness, his wife constantly cared for her husband. However, Nazrul's health seriously deteriorated and he grew increasingly depressed. He underwent medical treatment under homeopathy as well as Ayurveda, but little progress was achieved before mental dysfunction intensified and he was admitted to a mental asylum in 1942. Spending four months there without making progress, Nazrul and his family began living a silent life in India. In 1952, he was transferred to a mental hospital in Ranchi. With the efforts of a large group of admirers who called themselves the "Nazrul Treatment Society" as well as prominent supporters such as the Indian politician Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the treatment society sent Nazrul and Promila to London, then to Vienna for treatment.[32] Examining doctors said he had received poor care, and Dr. Hans Hoff, a leading neurosurgeon in Vienna, diagnosed that Nazrul was suffering from Pick's disease. His condition judged to be incurable, Nazrul returned to Calcutta on 15 December 1953.[32] On 30 June 1962 his wife Pramila died and Nazrul remained in intensive medical care.

omg! why would BD change its national anthem? Bangladesh is known as sonar bangla due to that song. Its a very beautiful song. Bangladesh is also known as
"Bangla" so the song is perfect for anthem. l find the song nicer than the Indian or Pakistani national anthem.

But the only problem with this song was that it was written to prevent us from being independent from West Bangla.

Nazrul was a muazzen of a mosque. He wrote several hamd, naa't and also wrote several bhajan, kirtan. He married a hindu woman from comilla and named his kids muslim-hindu names. Due to his secular stand he was condemned by several mullas and was declaired kafir for his secularism but when he wrote a line in a poem about his desire to be buried next to a mosque the mullas calmed down and now Nazrul is considered a great Muslim by many mullas.

  was he an Indian subject or Indian slave or Indian property that Indian Govt Consent was needed .

BTW brought is word sounding more appropriate for objects and animals not human.

That's quoted from wiki. Check wiki and still if you are not satisfied, go and ask the author, why he has used those words. :D

Before asking me about what I excel and what I not, it's some kind of fools' job to assume. Well, Fazlul Haq and Suhrawardi were of different ideology and their aim was to develop East Bangla and make it free from Britain's Kolkata dogs.

Consent of India govt.? Surprising surprising. Ye kya nai gul hai janaab!

It's a cheesy song in my opinion.

Ignoring @TheRafael00000 's rants/swearing, he did have a point. Why should we see foreigners as inspirations? Did we not fight to make our will our own? Though, the concept of a Muslim Bengali is still largely a novelty.

Both Tagore and Nazrul Islam were Indian, and hence foreign.

All pre independence poets or personality were not foreigner. He wrote and lived in undevided bengal. So did Rabindranath. So they are pretty much our people as much as theirs.

Bringing Nazrul to BD was the best thing Sheikh has done for the Bengalee Muslims. Sheikh literally hijacked him. It is no secret that this soldier poet singing for freedom had alerted the British colonials as well as Calcutta Hindu intellectuals. Here was a Muslim entering their exclusive domain. Here was a rebel who was understood and appreciated by the masses unlike Tagore. He sang what was in the heart of the enslaved. The common man sings his songs, but the common man barely comprehends Tagore. But wait! The Calcutta intellectuals were scandalized when Nazrul sang of Eid festival, Muslim heroes, Kamal Pasha and Enver Pasha. Using Urdu and Persian words and common phrases in Arabic and Turkish brought the sky down on their head. He sang of the Holy Prophet pbuh and his mother Amena. It is no wonder, therefore, that many believe the jealous Hindu intellectuals had him poisoned, and later administered wrong treatment. While the first part remains unsubstantiated, the second part was found true by his doctors in Vienna. And to character-assassinate him, the Hindus spread the rumor that he had Syphilis - which was rubbished by his Vienna doctors.

According to Wikipedia, around 25% of West Bengal's population are Muslims. What flag do they carry during a cricket match between Bangladesh and India?
