Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday said Beijing and New Delhi should seize opportunities to expand converging interests and backed India for greater role in international affairs.

“As a fast growing big country with over a billion people, India should and can play an increasingly important role in international affairs,” he said addressing the Indian Council of World Affairs.

“China and India have shared interests and common views on the issue of U.N. Security Council reform. We both maintain that priority should be given to increasing the representation of developing countries,” he said.

Terming the boundary dispute between the two countries as a “historical legacy”, Mr. Wen said, “It would not be easy to completely resolve this question.

“It requires patience and will take a fairly long period of time. Only with sincerity, mutual trust and perseverance can we eventually find a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution,” he said.

Mr. Wen noted that the two countries have had good dialogue and communication and expressed a sincere desire to work together to resolve the boundary question.

“In the face of difficulty, the most important thing to do is to press ahead along the right track, narrow differences step by step, build consensus and increase confidence,” he said.

Mr. Wen said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and he had agreed to set up a working mechanism for consultation and coordination on border affairs “which would help enhance our mutual trust and maintain peace and tranquillity in the region“.

On the economic front, Mr. Wen said China understood India’s concerns on bilateral trade imbalance and was ready to take measures to facilitate access of Indian IT products, pharmaceuticals and farm produce to the Chinese market.

China and India should work together to achieve a $100 billion two-way trade target by 2015, he said, adding that agreements worth $16 billion were inked during his visit.

Mr. Wen announced that China would provide $1 million for the reconstruction of Nalanda University, the ancient seat of learning in Bihar which was a favourite of visiting Chinese scholars.

The two countries declared that next year would be the Year of China-India exchange which would see 500 Indian youths visiting the nation.

If India has a problem with the trade balance, then they don't need to trade with us.

No one is forcing them to do it.

India has problem with trade balance; even US has trade balance with China. That does not mean trade be stopped; there are other ways to sort out the problem, as premier Wen has suggested

That is true, in spite of India and China being neighbors, we know don't know much about each other. The exchange would go in a long way in improving relationship between India and China

Do you know that if India, and by that logic, other countries including the US were to not trade with China, what havoc it will wreck on the export driven economy that China has?

It's better to not make stupid comments in the first place than to defend them later.

Look at the list above. ^^^

Our most important trade partners are the EU, America and Japan. India isn't even on the list.

India can keep increasing their trade deficit to us, I'm not complaining. All I said is that no one is forcing India to do it, India is doing it out of their own free will.

Exactly, trust me it really helps build bridges. In Islamabad the Chinese Friendship centre is a wealth of knowledge about China, Chinese culture their food a traditions.

I remember we attended an even there a few years back when they were traditional martial artists from China and traditional sweets like "Old Man's Beard Candy"... Very interesting.

In 2005 we were lucky enough to get a sponsored visit to China and i loved it, it was one of the best experiences in my life. And i hope Indian youth can benefit from that as well.

You've made it pretty obvious that what I'm trying to convey is beyond your ken. Hence, no point in discussing it any further with you.

If India wants to keep increasing their trade deficit to us, why should I complain? Thanks for the money I guess?

If you guys want to whine about your deficit, you can either do something about it, or just keep whining. I'll be expecting the latter option.
