I am thinking about buying property in india. It's pretty cheap, and hiring servants to maintain your property is also inexpensive, especially around areas like uttar pradesh and west bengal. Not only is living in india much cheaper than china, but its also more "free" so to speak, like there are very little laws, as least as far as enforcement goes. Maybe this summer me and a few buddies will travel to india and test out the place 1st before we dive in.

can any indian members recommend a good spot for foreigners?

Nope.. The dowry killings and honor killings have already killed all woman here since decades and since woman doesnt exist the generations of people have dried up.. its just a barren land... she can come but expect no people to meet or see...

Dowry killing and the likes are seen in certain parts of north India mainly in HP/UP belt.. That too in rural and relatively less developed areas.. There would be no problem for any women from anywhere in the world to marry Indians in most/all of the cities in any way..!!

Hell two of my very good friends have married foreign nationals and they stay here in my city only... One is from Germany and the other is a Russian.. Both the foreign girls didn't have any problems what so ever.. The guys family were definitely surprised and a bit unwelcoming in the beginning; but they too came around in a few months..

It would be really nice and interesting to see the response of the world when they see India-China growing much closer to each other to the extent of being big and small brother...but for that to happen we need to stop fighting and spitting venom over each other in these forums...lets make it a Asian century and bring more Forunes to our own peoples cos tensions btw giants like us is not going to do any good....

You are welcome. Actually the Chinese community in India has been an extremely industrious and enterprising group of people. And add to that resilience and adaptability as qualities. For example, their shoe-making (and leather-working) talents were legendary. Some of the best foot-wear that I've ever worn were made by Chinese shoe-makers (esp. the ones around Bentinck Street in Calcutta), they could craft their shoes just to snugly fit a single human foot. Sometimes a single being may have slightly different feet! Even Nike and Adidas cannot cope with that. But automation and man-made materials gradually destroyed their art.

However as I said, that community posessed both resilience and adaptability. So they (or their children) did not hesitate to attempt new things. One of them I know well, went to Oxford on Rhodes scholarship and then landed up in USA. The post#1 in this thread attests to that aspect as well. Of course they continued their traditional trades as well, notably running restaurants. Of course they adapted some aspects of their cuisine to accommodate Indian tastes; esp. the so-called "Manchurian dishes"!
And in the process, popularised Chinese food. So much so that most Indian street food stalls (not run by Chinese) have some "Chinese dishes" on the bill of fare. And anybody familiar with authentic Chinese cuisine is left scratching his/her head at the taste!

So they are a part of India and Indian life and even Indian culture today. Actually every Indian woman who has this incredible love affair with the feel of rustling Silk against her skin either as a sari or any other Indian garment has to thank the Chinese for it!

And Oh! I just forgot about my favorite cuppa "chai" (tea)!

Mostly from the mainland, especially from the Guangdong region. First arrivals were Chinese silk traders, later at the time of the advent of Chiang Kai-Shek and then later at the time of the Communist Revolution.
