Putin to meet Iran's Ahmadinejad in China

Putin to meet Iran's Ahmadinejad in China | News | Business Spectator

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of a summit in Beijing next week as tensions rise over Tehran's nuclear drive, a Kremlin official said.

"Meeting Ahmadinejad will let Putin personally feel the tension around the Iranian issue and how it is perceived in Tehran," Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov told reporters last week in comments that were embargoed for release until Sunday.

Putin and Ahmadinejad agreed over the phone to meet and the initiative came "from both sides", Ushakov said.

The meeting will come as Russia prepares to host the latest round of talks on June 18 and 19 between world powers and Iranian negotiators in a bid to find a diplomatic solution to the standoff over Iran's nuclear program.

The Moscow talks will follow a meeting last month in Baghdad where the six world powers -- the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany -- confronted Tehran over its intention to enrich uranium despite fears it was building a nuclear bomb.

The talks achieved little in two days of intense discussions besides setting up the next meeting in Moscow.

Like Western capitals, Russia "was not too happy" with the outcome of the Baghdad talks, but "understood the main thing, which is readiness of both sides to continue talks", Ushakov said.

"Only in dialogue is it possible to get a sense of any sort of compromise, which is crucial to unblock this situation ... and leave out the most scary scenarios."

Russia has repeatedly warned against using military action against Iran -- an option never ruled out by Israel or the United States -- and said that this could cause a catastrophe in the Middle East.

Putin will meet Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. He is also scheduled to speak with Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai in a bilateral meeting.

The meeting with Ahmadinejad will be Putin's first since his return to the Kremlin for a third term after a four-year stint as prime minister.

During his second term as president, Putin met Ahmadinejad in Tehran in 2007 in a rare visit to the country by the Kremlin chief.

The Russian delegation to the China summit is a show of force with "all the major names of Russian business in attendance," said Ushakov.

Putin is also due to meet China's President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

With China preparing for a stage-managed leadership change, Putin will also meet Vice Premier Li Kequiang, who is set to be the next premier, and Xi Jinping, who is tipped as the next president.

He called Iran an ally of India , Pakistan and China . Nothing wrong with that. I don't understand people's obsession with pigs on this forum .

I doubt India will ever be allowed to join as China will never let you.
Iran will eventually be allowed after the tensions are reduced and Pakistan will join too.

Time will tell . Russia wants India in . It could lead to some power struggle between those two . Anyway i don't think China will mind India's accession . We are observers already and SCO isn't a military alliance .

what I don't get is why don;t Russia-china-Iran-Pakistan make a military alliance?
NATO is still there and will always have an excuse to exists so we need to prepare ourselves.

It depends on what type it is not to mention Money.

Why not Iran, India and Pakistan all of them included in SCO?

Sure, there is this Kashmir dispute. But what is the big hurdle in solving this petty land dispute? USSR and China had far larger border disputes but they were solved peacefully with both sides respecting them. This is one reason why SCO was possible.

As far as I can see, unless Pakistan and India reaches a settlement by peaceful means in Kashmir dispute, including either of them in SCO will be very difficult over the long run (eg. which NATO countries are enemy of each other?). The relationship between member countries must be harmonius.

We should see Indian army and pakistan army conducting joint exercises and drills.

Iran is not an ally, one would not participate in an economic blockade if you consider a country ally. Iran to India and China is a energy supplier and an important one.

The SCO is an intergovernmental international organization established on in June 2001 by Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Observer states include India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan, while its dialogue partners include Belarus and Sri Lanka.

So India, Iran and even Pakistan are observer status currently. What I want to know is what is the purpose of SCO? Is it supposed to be a counter for NATO? And more importantly, I am surprised that India is a member of something China is also a member of. Last time I heard, I thought India and China were rivals? Is SCO supposed to be something that is to be used to bridge the gap and deepen understanding and co-operation between India and China?

west want to isolate Iran and here we go Asia dont want, Pakistan, China, Russia all dont want this is blow on west face.
