TURBINE SYSTEM COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONS

TURBINE:

The SWB-11 Mamba turbojet is a single shaft engine with centrifugal compressor and
axial flow turbine. Two fuel/oil lubricated ceramic hybrid cageless ball bearings support
the shaft. An annular combustor is used and turbine throttle is controlled by a pulse
width modulated (PWM) voltage supplied to an electric geared fuel pump.

FUEL SYSTEM:

The fuel system consists of the following components:

1. Geared fuel pump
2. Fuel tubing
3. ECU and battery
4. Fuel filter
5. ECU controlled fuel solenoid valve

The geared pump is powered by the ECU and battery pack. Pump speed is controlled via
pulse width modulated voltage supplied by the ECU directly to the pump. Fuel supply is
triggered and terminated using the fuel solenoid valve, controlled entirely by the ECU.

Fuels used are Jet A, A1, or clear Kerosene and Propane/Butane for starting.

PROPANE SYSTEM:

The propane system consists of the following components:

1. Festo one way self-sealing quick connector
2. Propane plumbing
3. ECU controlled propane solenoid
4. SWB propane regulator

LUBRICATION SYSTEM:

Lubrication is achieved with a fuel oil mix at a ratio of 1 part oil to 16 parts fuel. This
correlates to one quart of oil for every four gallons of fuel. Example – one quart of Mobil
Jet #2, Exxon 2380, or BP2380 or equivalent turbine oil to be added to four gallons of Jet
A, A1, or Kerosene.

Caution: It is very important to filter the fuel! A filter must be used in your fueling
system as well as in the aircraft fuel lines. Filter your fuel every time you transfer it from
tank to tank!

ECU (Electronic Control Unit)/DATA TERMINAL

The ECU controls the throttle command given to the engine with input from the user and
input from the engine in the form of RPM and EGT. With this information, the ECU
follows set rules and formulae for stable performance.

By sensing engine RPM, exhaust gas temperature, and ECU battery voltage, the ECU can
properly command the fuel pump with a pulse width modulated voltage that keeps engine
operation safe and stable. A specialized version of SWB’s advanced military grade engine control algorithm is used with the Mamba controller because of its time and
application proven performance and stability.

The algorithm controls all aspects of the Mamba’s starting sequence to ensure benign
starting. Additionally, the ECU monitors in flight parameters such as EGT and RPM to
be within the range of acceptable parameters and running conditions outlined in the
ECU’s factory algorithm.

In the event that the ECU loses its RPM reading, the engine is set to LIMP HOME mode,
where-in it operates at a reduced power setting to attempt to save the airplane and
minimize risk to personnel and property.
