Most of the wars the US fights are about making money, or exerting influence so it can make money later on. In those types of wars it makes sense to limit casualties as the general public are aware of why they go to war, and at some point don't want to see tens of thousands dead for profits.

The US would probably compromise to avoid an attack on it's carrier groups in region, but an attack on USCG's would be considered an attack on the US itself, which would leave them no scope to save face - forcing them to attack. The thousands of dead soldiers would give them the political capital to attack and would in fact compel them to attack to appease public bloodlust.

Best case scenario is hundreds of thousands of dead Chinese and American soldiers, trillions of dollars worth of damage to infrastructure and the economy, global recession.

Worst case scenario is large scale nuclear war and the horrors that brings. Neither the Chinese or Americans are willing to risk full plates for one more bite surely.

US enter World War 2 at the height of Japanese Expansion, Germany only suffered one defeat, and that is the Battle of Britain, Stalingrad is still 9 months away when US joined WW2 on allied side.

Also, he continently forget to mention US lost 55 thousand soldier in a 11 years war (US involvement since 64' to 75') and the reason why US withdraw from the war is not because of the casualty, its because of the political will. Had US/RVN army are allowed to enter the North, the war will have more US casualty, but will also finished quicker (either Russia don't care and US will win in a quike fight, or Russia do care and a nuclear exchange breaks out, either way it will be a short war) Casualty number were never a reason to withdraw, in fact, the US had expected more casualty, I think their original estimate before the American got involved is at around 100k KIA and around 1 millions Casualty.
