We are not leaving Afghanistan at the end of next year: US - Hindustan Times

The US has reiterated its long term commitment to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, allaying India's concerns over America's stated policy to start withdrawing its troops from the war-torn country beginning July 2011. "We're not leaving Afghanistan or the region at the end of next year," State Department spokesman P J Crowley told reporters at his daily news briefing.

Crowley was responding to questions about India's apprehensions on withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

New Delhi fears that after America withdraws troops from Afghanistan, the war-torn country will again slip back into the hands of Pakistan and anti-India elements.

"Our commitment to regional security is a significant one. We are going to be engaged with countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, India for a long time, because it is in our interest to do so," Crowley said.

"We have, per the President's decision, increased our military capabilities and force levels in Afghanistan. The timeline that the President outlined back in December is well known," he said, adding various reviews including those by NATO and Washington would come up at the end of this year.

"As the President said, we see July 2011 as an important transition point, but remember that we have both a military and a civilian component to our strategy. You know, the military element is not open-ended," he said.

The spokesman said American and international forces would gradually withdraw as Afghan forces build up its capabilities.

As per the Kabul Conference, the Afghan plan is to provide security responsibility to the home forces throughout the country by 2014, he said.

"So we are there to help stabilise the security situation in Afghanistan. We are there to begin to grow legal economy in Afghanistan, increase the capacity of the Afghan government at all levels -- national, regional, local. But our commitment to Afghanistan -- we will be there for many, many years," Crowley said.

"Over time, obviously the military element of the strategy will be reduced, and the civilian element of the strategy will, you know, continue apace. It's exactly what's happening in Iraq, for example," he added.

:P Ejaz why HT or any other Indian media house is repeating this old news.

Its a known fact that earlier they announced the withdrawal by 2011 and now it has been changed to 2014 which also depends of the scheme of the things.

So obviously they are not going next year because its not 2014

If USA leaves behind an unstable Afghanistan with a powerful Taliban, then God save (in descending order):

1. Afghanistan
2. Pakistan
3. India

Shouldnt be much of a bother to US though!

.
Americans are not going anywhere. They will not repeat the same mistake they did in Afghanistan when they vacated after the collapse of the Soviets.

.
america has done nothing good there , terrorists with kalashnikovs have made kebabs out of their sophesticated milatry, its high time US redesign its strategy in Afghanistan

Split Afghanistan up...I reckon the North will be happy to go their own way. This way NATO concentrate on only a smaller area in the south.Only the Pashtuns seem to have a problem giving up the Taliban anyway.

friend, poor pashtuns are the first hand victim of the taliban. other people are more or less free of the talban, go to the north, west and central parts, economy, security, job opportunity, education, social development, infrastructure, culture etc is in a really good shape compare to what it was before. hope our brothers in the south and soon free of the taliban and start their normal lives again. By the way, NATO doesnt have any significance presence in those areas. they dont need to be there.

I know..which is why treating Afghanistan as a whole is a problem. The parts of Afghanistan in perpetual conflict are in the south so let us concentrate there and let the others prosper as they can.

I am sorry but I cannot absolve the Pashtuns of complete blame..the Taliban are almost completely made up of Pasthuns are they not.Why do the tribe leaders not come out and and fight against them?

what can the tribe elders do against brutal taliban? they get beheaded, simple as that. they even beheads journalists, teachers, stuedents etc.

Because the 'them' is part of the Talibans.

No insurgency can survive for so long against the most powerful military alliance (NATO) in the world without significant local support. What we are seeing in Afghanistan are tribes/ethnic groups against each other.

The same thing can be said about the Pashtoons of FATA, they couldnt survive without the full support of the locals agains PA.

Of course.Just for example the Swati people supported Taliban but when Taliban showed their real face they realized that they were wrong.I can tell you for a fact that all taliban cheerleades here are just hypocrites. No one and i repeat no one here can live under Taliban type shria and what is even more amazing that their supporters usually live in countries like UK.
