WDAM (Wireless Detection & Aiming Module) is a combination of a close-in remote control weapon system (CIWS) and a common remotely operated weapon system (CROWS). These systems are meant for aerial & ground targets (depending on the implementation) at a relatively short range. CIWS is normally used on naval ships or security-sensitive vicinities as a last line of defense whereas CROWS finds its place on the ground for short range combat. WDAM implements three technologies for its success, wireless communication, embedded systems and software interfacing (GUI). Intense work on the project resulted in a successful integration of all three technologies into one system, which includes the set-up of two high power stepper motors (in order to easily carry the weight of the gun mount), one for each direction (horizontal & vertical). These stepper motors are controlled by a single microcontroller unit (PIC18F452). The mechanical structure is controlled manually by a joystick. The wireless communication part is achieved using the popular Xbee module for remote access to the module. The GUI is made through the software NI LABVIEW through which the mechanical movement is achieved. The WDAM illustrates the first fundamental steps that are necessary to take in order to design a real-world applicable weapon system. The ideas presented can be used to further enhance or modify WDAM for several combat purposes.
