Many times in history Tibet had been independent of China. Of course, neither Nehru and Mao wanted super-powers like America or Soviet union there. Despite the discord, China and India both agree, that Tibet needs to be Asian.
Interesting note, the reason why the Tibetan capital is far away from Mainland China and closer to India was because of historical wars. Usually Chinese ransacked the Tibetan throne until eventually they moved closer to India and became nearly impossible for China invade. Eventually though, the China India trade made Tibet dependent on China as a gateway. So Tibet will not fully develop until India China trade kicks off on land. Something possible in the near future.
