Was the Bangladeshi MIG 29's necessary?

as if Helis are the only way to win a war.

Against whom you are dreaming of winning a war??? :what:

IMO no one is interested in invading Bangladesh. A squadron or two doesn't add any substancial deterrence and more you cant afford.
So why investing in something meant for nothing. Better invest in some profittable ventures, earn significantly first and then build your army.

Sir, you are wasting your time preaching to a country who is trying to punch above their league. If they want to waste their resources on something that wont give them any strategic advantage , but feels to do so because it gives them an ego boost let them be. Who are we to stop them?

Some witch doctor here is suggesting to buy ONLY helicopters but not Migs, F-16s, JF-17 or J-10s, SAMs, SSMs, Tanks and others as if Helis are the only way to win a war. Our military Generals should start a new class whereby the witch doctor comes and lectures about Helis as if people do not know at all about the heli functions in a war.

This doctor teaches people that Americans came and developed Japan after 2nd WW. Thing is, a big mountain looks small to a person's eyes if he puts his small thumb (read IGNORANCE) in front of his eyes.

Oh Jesus *facepalm*

A war? Really? A war against whom? Who and why is anyone going to military invade Bangladesh? You haven't provided a single explanation for that other than your fanboy stuff.

Bangladeshis are still getting along with their lives in peace amidst all the problems at home for which only Bangladeshis are ultimately to blame themselves.

I never said Americans came and developed Japan after WWII. Read up W. Edwards Deming and you'll see what I mean.

The intention behind those MIG-29 purchases were simply to fill a few pockets during the Hasina administration. Nothing more. Maybe still is

You really have no clue as to the true nature of the affairs behind military purchases in Bangladesh. And there is an important reason why they are always kept a low profile among the public of Bangladesh. But I'll leave it to your ignorance.

I think you sir have a case of inferiority complex and low self-esteem.

Oh, and before you say I am a "witchdoctor", understand that my brother-in-law was in the army. He retired as a Colonel. My uncle once served in the air force during the Pakistan era. So you could say that I do have some knowledge in Bangladesh military affairs and military in general.

The main battlefield is in our own country and among Bangladeshis themselves. Not India.

Nah Nah guys I dont want to be anti indian or stuff but I think that the Indians have a preety big mouth (no offence, just my opinion) and all they talk about with foreigners is that HOW AWESOME INDIA is and really lets face it man, India's not THAT AWESOME right? it still has problems and a HUGE population. India has really developed in recent years but I think Bangladesh will follow...SOON......

Well buddy, I think you dont understand the political sicience as well as the definition of statehood. A strong army is not only for going to war but without a army the definition of state cease to exist. Who do you think will invade Singapore yet they are purchasing most sophisticated war plane. Who do you think will invate indoneshia, or vietnam or Thailand???

Do you think somebody had a long term plan to invade United Kingdom or France?? Why do they need strong arm force? Why does even China need a army???

Even four submarine along with 4 squadron of F-16 will be enough to give much headache to Indian.. We are not diverting our development resources to army rahter army is under funded which needed to be raised.

I was replying to eastwatch's idea that we have to go to war against India or something.

Well, countries like Singapore have money, and had an uncomfortable relationship with its surrounding Muslim neighbors. In fact, the Western countries you have mentioned are cutting their military budgets.

China is a different story.

Not saying we don't need an army. If I said we didn't need an army, I might say something like "screw the fact that Bangladesh is the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping."

I am critical of the way in which those MIGs were purchased. And it was something we didn't even need to address national security issues back in the 90's when they were purchased during the Hasina administration. Russians have lousy customer service.

Although, it would make more sense to replace the aging A-5s.

A dedicated attack heli (not an MI-17 with rocket pods ) would also be good. This is what Bangladesh military is really lacking.

Only wish our politicians were less corrupt.

Yeah, they always think they are number 1

We just need strong leadership to move forward.

We don't have to worry about a country whose rear end was duly kicked out by the LTTE. A country where the Maoists run wild. BTW terrorist LTTE was trained by the Indians. The military is only good in killing innocent Sikhs and Kashmiris, and NE folks who look Chinese.

Nope. We don't have to worry about a Banana Republic. :coffee:

Well, most Bangladeshis want three square meals a day and a roof over their heads under which they can live comfortably. They could care less about fancy planes and all.

And actually, we don't really worry about India all that much. Yes there are longstanding issues between Bangladesh and India, but we don't need war for that.

Cheers

Bangladesh doesn't need expensive jets do address those.

To deal with those we don't need jets, agreed.

We do need defense, even for a poor country like ours. This is not fancy stuff. If you don't have a good military you get slapped around like the Nepalis. You also need to think about the theater we are in. There is India, Myanmar, China, and also Pakistan. What if some country demands that our country should give them military corridor ? Simply saying no is not going to work !!!!

There are also maritime boundary issues. The Myanmar folks talk with their warships, and jets. Well we can ask a big boy to help us out, as you know none of those things come free, but strings attached.

Well, when we need soldiers, we REALLY need them. Of-course, why should we give corridor to a foreign military. Although, I could care less about Sino-Indo hostilities.

My point was that the MIGs were a poor investment decision back in the 90's and it was riddled with corruption. They were just bought to fill some AL pockets.

We will just have to agree to dis-agree.

Every country regardless of size and power needs a military for its security. Even Bhutan has its own military. Never did I say: "screw the military!"

We don't need to worry about India anyways.

And if they do decide to invade for some reason, we are already screwed even before their land forces come.

We can fight a guerrilla war at best.

The whole thing about India invading Bangladesh is nothing but hypothetical at best.

But lets be really honest here, we are absolutely no match against the military of India in the context of conventional warfare. Both in terms of quantity and quality. Warmongering against India won't help one bit.

Myanmar has many problems of its own. It is dead inside with a pretty shell on the outside.

Even with a big army, Bangladesh has holes in its security. And even had holes that were overlooked. Why? It is more worthwhile thinking about that rather than expensive jets.
