Warships being sent to evacuate Indians from Libya

Give the poor kid a break.

Why would they send military warships? Why can't they send a normal/commercial Cargo Ship which would accommodate the whole of indians in Libya considering the space on those ships. How would you accommodate that populace on a military ship since there isn't enough room?
well because we dont throw our citizins in a cargo ship like some goods cargo ships are not meant to carry humans lol we dont know if you giys do so

As per latest info Ins Jalashwa has reached Egypt and will move in towards Benghazi now
Govt has also decided to send 2 Shardul class LST and 1 Magar class LST to Libya
One of the chief reason for sending Warships for evacuation is coz african waters are not exactly safe for Civilian ships and it is always better to send armed warships for rescue operation in a conflict zone coz rival factions are less likely to target an armed destroyer than a cargo ship

Jalashawa will leave Mumbai in a few hrs.

Government sources say two destroyers and INS Jalashawa will be dispatched from Mumbai in the next few hours. They will take 12 days to reach Libya.

In the meantime, the government has hired a private cruise ship that was already in the region. It can accommodate 1200 passengers and is sailing now from Egypt to Benghazi, the centre of the revolt in Libya. Government and medical officials will be on board the ship to provide assistance.

After leaving Benghazi, the cruise ship, named the Scotia Prince, is expected to dock in Alexandria in Egypt by March 1. From there, the passengers will be flown to India on special Air India flights.

The Naval ships will be used to move Indians from Tripoli to Alexandria. 8500 people are to be evacuated by the navy from Tripoli, another 1500 from Benghazi.

12 days??? Is this true??? Seems like a very long time, the entire situation could/would have changed by the time the fleet arrives.

+ Is there any confirmation on the make-up of the fleet there are conflicting reports of Destroyers, INS Jalaswa, LSTs etc. Size numbers?? Sources??

Yeah as you all are saying.
You are sending military ships to take them.

If it were aircrafts, you would have sent bombers?
A cargo or passenger ship would have been better idea.

No, we would have sent MILITARY cargo planes (Il76, C-130-30j,An-32)

Stupid logic that has been explained ^^^(Karthic Sri):

That is why LPDs are being sent. And Indian Government (or any other Govt) does not own any passenger ship for it to send. That is why they primarily send warships and this is not a recent phenomenon nor limited to India.

And if you ask about cargo ships they are meant to transport cargo and not humans.

At least GOI has the means and will to help its citizens what is GOP doing?? Sitting back saying all 18,000 are fine!!

We all know you will criticise GOI/India for anything it does, they say left you say stupid blah, blah, Hindus (ignoring Secular India's identity), blah,blah....Right

No need to post if you don't know the facts.

Its not 'ONLY' about evacuation its also include the message every country send that shows who are you and what capabilities you possesses.

I will give you 2 example here:

a.) In the operation sukoon we have evacuated not only Indian but also the Nepalis and Sri Lankans that brings us the goodwill.

b.) At the time of Tsunami Indian Navy was the first navy to reach Indonesia, Sri Lanka etc. etc. for the rescue and huminitarion work.

But that large scale and swift movement of our forces send a loud and clear message across the region and beyond about our capabilities and capacities.

I clearly remember a statement of a high ranking Sri Lankan official that the pace and ease at which Indian Navy formed a iron curtain around us show us that we have to be very sensitive to Indian concerns while playing china card.

Its our some kind of show of strength that will attract new friends who want to be in touch of a friendly and strong military power. ;)

Why is it so difficult to understand the simple reasons already given by us for sending military vessels? Anyway, not be be rude, but it is OUR navy sending OUR ships to rescue OUR citizens. Let us do it whatever way we think is best. However, you could ask your government to use cargo ships to rescue the 18,000 Pakistanis also stuck in Libya..... not that I see many other options anyway.

12 days to reach libya ?:hang2: we could have sent the required no. of planes, they wouldn't have taken 12 days for sure!!

True, but those planes must be able to land somewhere. The runways in Benghazi and Tripoli (where most of the trouble is) are damaged and unusable.
In any case no Indian airline normally has commercial flights to Libya, therefore there are no automatic landing rights. So flights in and out of Libya depends on getting special permission for each flight.

Forgot to add - another reason warships are being sent is that the Gulf of Aden area is infested with pirates and no one wants a ship load of hostages in the hands of the murderous pirates.

Same thought,

I was wondering if the piracy in the region will hamper the rescue efforts in some way.

Sometimes I wonder if our government was any slower, it would be making decisions in reverse. The orders for evacuation should have been given on the first day of instability itself. With Gaddafi ordering bombing of his own people, there is no telling whether Indians could be safe there or not.
