LahoreFederal Secretary Water and Power Saif Ullah Chattha on Saturday directed the WAPDA authorities to accelerate work on small and medium-sized dams in all the four provinces, besides expediting construction activities on other mega projects.
He issued this directives, while reviewing progress on various water and power projects here at WAPDA (Water and Power Development Authority) House.
The Federal Secretary said that construction work on Naulong and Winder dams located in Balochistan be started immediately. He also directed WAPDA Chairman to expedite work on Nai Gaj Dam in Sindh, Ghabir Dam in Punjab and Kurram Tangi Dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA.
In his briefing, WAPDA Chairman Syed Raghib Abbas Shah assured that Naulong, Winder, Ghabir and Nai Gaj Dam projects would be completed in three years, provided the funds were made available for the purpose.
On completion of these projects, he said, about 650,000 acre feet of water would be stored, which was enough to irrigate more than 130,000 acres of land. Kaitu weir of Kurram Tangi Dam would also be completed in two years and it would irrigate 16,400 acres of land, he added.
It is mention that these projects were almost stands still for want of funds, however, the Water and Power Federal Secretary assured that appropriate funds would be arranged for these projects to be completed in three years. These projects were of immense importance for poverty alleviation and socio-economic development in the far-flung areas, besides controlling migration from the backward areas.
Naulong Dam Project located in Jhal Magsi district of Balochistan had the gross water storage capacity of 242,000 acre feet with command area of 47,000 acres, while Winder Dam located in Lasbela district of Balochistan would store 36,484 acre feet of water and irrigate 10,000 acres of land. Ghabir Dam located in Chakwal district of Punjab with a gross storage capacity of 66,200 acre feet, would irrigate 15,000 acres of land.
Similarly, Nai Gah Dam being constructed in Dadu district of Sindh has gross storage capacity of 300,000 acre feet with command area of 57,800 acres of land.APP
