I'm confident that Modi-ji will quickly rectify the situation. A phone call to Obama will reverse the visa restrictions. America cannot function without Indian immigrants and students. Obama should be made aware that 39% of all doctors in America, 38% of NASA engineers, 41% of Google engineers, 36% of Facebook engineers, and 82% of all Apple engineers are Indians. I'm confident that under Modi-ji's brilliant leadership, India will become a superpower by 2020!

Want to enter US? Now just a visa won't suffice
NEW DELHI: US is not just denying entry to Indian students with valid visas but has also deported some Indians travelling to the country on work, business and tourism visas, the government said Wednesday.

In another advisory, it asked all Indians, not just students, to carry valid supporting documents when travelling to the US. The advisory said India had strongly emphasised before the US the need to honour visas issued by its own embassy and consulates.

The government asked all Indian nationals to carry the "necessary supporting documentations regarding place of stay, financial support, medical arrangements, sponsorship details etc''.

"Government of India continues to remain closely engaged with the US Government on this subject. We have strongly emphasised the need for the US authorities to honour the visas issued by their own Embassy/Consulates,'' said the advisory.

The government had earlier taken up with the US the denial of entry to Indian students seeking admission to Silicon Valley University, San Jose and Northwestern Polytechnic University, Fremont. The students were denied entry by immigration officials despite their holding valid visas.

According to MEA, the US has conveyed that the decision to deny entry to these students is not because of the corresponding institutions being "blacklisted" but based on the assessment made by the US immigration authorities of individual applicants. According to the US government, the deported persons had presented information to the border patrol agent which was inconsistent with their visa status.

The universities in question had earlier denied too that they were blacklisted and said that the denial of entry had more to do with tightening of visa regulations by the US after the Paris terror attacks.

The government reiterated that all Indian students seeking admission in US educational institutions should do due diligence to ensure that the institutions to which they are seeking admission have proper authorization and capacities.

Apart from travel documents, the students should also carry all required documentation regarding their study plans, housing, financial support, healthcare arrangements etc. and be prepared for admission (entry to the US) interviews with US immigration officials.

What stupidity is this?

If there is a valid visa after scrutinizing every document, what else do you need?

- Valid passport.

- Business invitation.

- Visa.

- Maybe a brief about who you are and your purpose.

If at all this is true, then it is extremely strange.

Visas are issued by Department of State, but immigration is handled through Department of Homeland Security. I assume all visa applicants must pass a security check with DHS before being issued a visa, but may be there is a crack in the system.

That's internal issue. Why does a passenger with valid documents need to suffer after coughing up lots of money?

US hikes H1B, L1 visa fee; move to hit Indian IT companies

The US has imposed an additional fee of up to $4,500 for certain categories of the popular H-1B and L-1 visas, in a blow to Indian IT firms which have to incur an additional burden of about $400 million annually.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) said applicants for certain categories of H-1B visas post December 18, 2015 must submit an additional fee of $4,000. The H1B visa is designed to allow US employers to recruit and employ foreign professionals in speciality occupations within the US.

In addition, for those applying for certain L-1A and L-1B must submit an additional $4,500. L-1 visas are available to employees of an international company with offices in both the United States and abroad.

Referring to the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2016 signed into law by US President Barack Obama on December 18, 2015, USCIS said the additional fees apply to petitioners who employ 50 or more employees in the US, with more than 50% of those employees in H-1B or L (including L-1A and L-1B) non-immigrant status.

This fee is in addition to the base processing fee, Fraud Prevention and Detection Fee, American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act of 1998 fee (when required), as well as the premium processing fee, if applicable.

This will remain effective through September 30, 2025, USCIS said.

In a statement, USCIS warned that it will begin rejecting H-1B and L-1 visa petitions received on or after February 11, 2016 that do not carry the information required under the new law. USCIS also revised the necessary forms in this regard.

During the 30-day period immediately following this web alert, USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence (RFE) to determine whether the additional fee applies to the petition.

In a study released in September last year, NASSCOM, a trade association of Indian IT industry, said Indian IT companies have paid between $70 to $80 million annually for the US Treasury approximately. Given that, the new punitive measure is expected to raise between $1.4 billion and $1.6 billion every year for the next one decade.

It had said that as a result of the US action the Indian technology sector will have to bear additional burden of about $400 million annually and this could adversely impact competitiveness of India’s tech sector.

In December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue with Obama when the latter telephoned him to thank for his leadership role on achieving the historic agreement on climate change in Paris on December 12.
