Walton to procure 3 Italian compressor brands

Bangladesh electronic giant Walton Hi-Tech Industries is going to procure three compressor brands of Italian state-owned company Italia Wanbao-ACC.

The brands are ACC, Zanussi Elettromeccanica (ZEM) and Verdichter (VOE).

Walton disclosed it on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) website on Wednesday. But it did not disclose the procurement value in the statement.

An official of Walton said Italia Wanbao-ACC has sold its compressor unit to Walton in an open tender. The deal will be completed within next three months.

As per the deal, Italia Wanbao-ACC will stop its production in Italy and will send the factory setup – that has a capacity of producing 3.2 million units of compressors a year – to Bangladesh. This will give Walton a production capacity of 4.8 million units yearly.

Walton will form a subsidiary company to run the business in Europe and USA.
Walton will sell the compressor under the name of Italia Wanbao-ACC both in Bangladesh and abroad. Walton started its business initially purchasing compressors from the Italian company.

Italia Wanbao-ACC has been operating for the last 50 years and has business in 57 countries.

Walton will have to invest more than Tk1,000 crore initially for the project and the majority of financing will come from Germany-based lender DEG and Austrian lender OeEB.

It is a great news. Establishing the compressor workshop in BD will provide a tremendous strength to the country's industrialization.

There are many uses of compressors. I am not sure what types of compressors Walton will produce, though. I believe, it will not be limited to home appliances only. Among its many different uses, I watch its uses every day in the construction fields.

Construction sites can power a range of tools and equipment using a larger air compressor, such as drills, hammers and compactors. For remote sites without reliable access to electricity, petrol and diesel air compressors with large fuel tanks will provide uninterrupted power so you don't need to charge equipment or run a generator.

This Walton compressor factory will initiate a new era for BD industrialization.

BD govt should allow companies to invest abroad. Forex control don't help any way. ppl who want to take it out will do it illegally no matter how much control in place.

Hope to see more investment from bd.

Walton will produce refrigeration compressors @bluesky bhai. Buying Zanussi was a great move. The Brands are more valuable than the equipment.

Refrigeration compressors and Pneumatic compressors are different and work on slightly different (yet basically similar) principles of gas compression. Construction sites use Pneumatic compressors to drive pneumatic tools like demolition hammers, nail guns etc.

I remember that my Grand-dad bought a Zanussi refrigerator back in the 1960's - it was very reliable and survived almost 30 years.

Zanussi, Kelvinator, Norge were all made in Italy, UK and Norway (respectively) back then and very popular in Pakistan (among other Euro brands). Later almost all EU appliance manufacturing went to Italy in the 1980's.

Now we have come full circle. Wow!

Yes, I understand it. After all, Walton is just a maker of home appliances. It needs small compressors for the ACs.

But, I hope, someday a company, foreign or local, sets up shops to building large compressors used in the construction fields. I believe the Japanese, Korean and Chinese companies are already using large ones in many construction projects.

Does that mean Walton owns the whole brand zanussi?

I believe so. It is one of the three brands. Initially only compressors will be made under Zanussi brand.

Ultimately - I believe the retail brand Zanussi for appliances will be revived with new products Made in Bangladesh (Refrigerators to start with). Eventually other appliances such as water heaters, ranges, ovens and TV's will also be offered at much more economical price-points than they are now, I believe Zanussi as a brand is owned by the Italian govt. but don't know if they have mfr. operations outside Italy, in either Eastern EU or Turkey.

Defunct US electronics brands like Zenith, Westinghouse were all bought out by Hong Kong, Japanese and Korean companies and used to launch made-in-China electronics later on in the 90's and early 2000's.

Even some older Japanese High Fidelity brands like Akai and Sansui from the 70's, 80's and 90's were bought and revived by Chinese and Hong Kong companies in the same fashion Walton is doing with Zanussi right now.

Often only the brand survives because of name recognition benefit. The products offered later are not even of the same type sometimes - for example Sansui as a brandname was revived to sell mostly cheap under-market electronics like small boom boxes.

However I see Walton reviving the whole brand of Zanussi in light of Walton's own products, which apparently is not very competitive right now - though it has great name recognition in EU. TV's, tablets and Laptops may be offered under the brand which Zanussi never offered.

Here is Zanussi's HK website with product offerings. Mostly large home appliances and "white goods".
