Wah-Cantt

Thanks to Jinxe for starting this thread and posting these pics and thanks to others for posting info.

Wah is certainly on my list when I visit Pakistan next time. How is the real state in Wah insha-Allah? Is it as expensive as Islamabad?

It certainly is very clean. You do not see any Rickshaws or Horse-carts in Wah, which is why the streets are far cleaner than, say, Lahore. Also, Wah is heavily guarded, I hear it's taking up to 2 hours of waiting at the barriers to enter the City these days, because of increased security after the blast in 2008. It is one of the safest cities in all of Pakistan, partly because its heavily guarded on all sides by the Armed Forces, and partly because, due to the high literacy rate, the amount of people willing to commit crimes is low. You rarely ever hear of a murder or day-time break-in in Wah Cantt (I hope it stays that way).

Other than that, its biggest contributions is the Pakistan Ordnance Factories, which produces small firearms, tank munition etc. for Pakistan's Armed Forces. There is also the Air Weapons Complex which produces basic UAV and Robotic systems. Even though the city started out as an industrial town (for POF), it is now home to man private businesses.

Together with Kamra (PAC) and Taxilla (HIT), Wah Cantt (POF) forms the so-called "defense industry triangle". In the 1965 an 1971 Wars, the city was among the sensitive areas and saw regular Combat Air Patrols by Pakistan Air Force. At night, the power to the entire city would be cut off so as to make it difficult for enemy aircraft to target anyone. Wah Cantt's youth tends to be very patriotic, and many choose to join the Armed Forces (there's a Cadet College nearby known as Hassan Abdal College).

Frankly, Wah Cantt is an example city for Pakistan. It has high literacy rate, low crime rate, relatively good facilities (POF Sports Club, hotels, hospital, restaurants, etc.), low poverty rate, low unemployment, good governance (more or less), good communities, close proximity to major hubs like Islamabad and Rawalpindi. All this despite the fact that Wah Cantt is not a posh area or a relatively rich area, people here on average earn the same amount as other cities in Pakistan.

I haven't been to Wah Cantt since 2003. All this is stuff that I've researched by asking family members, online resources etc. I'll be visiting the place in March, InshAllah, and I'll try to post some pictures if I can. Jinxed_Girl sahiba, please correct any mistakes.

My grandmom was telling me there used to be a total blackout at nights to save the city from Indian attacks in 1965 and 1971.

<----- Here are one of the several heavily guarded barriers that surrounds the city. Foreigners are not allowed to visit the area without a pass, I don't know how Afghan refugees ended up in this area? :undecided:
