WAGAH

.
Watching the special broadcast of beating retreat at Wagah.

Can't help asking. Am I the only one who finds it cringeworthily embarrassing?

The whole thing. Eyes flashing, nostrils flaring etc.

its a show of bravado.
its normal.

You will also find cringe worthy items if you look into civilization of older generations.

I find it a little over the top as well.

But most desis like the panache and extra spice....just like our food and drink ;)...and its tyranny by majority I'm afraid.

I also have some level of disdain for various british-legacy procedures in the indian military when marching, parading etc. I think its time to move on and make them more clean and professional rather than have the excessive silly walk tradition I see sometimes. Not sure how it goes with the Pakistan military.

Oh and dont get me started with the jogging in one spot parade thing that the Indian paratroopers seem to have caught onto....and which seems to have a longer legacy among our neighbours to the west.

What do the honourable gents think?

oh and honourable lady too @Levina :D

One would, if they were to be subject to it daily. You have to see it once, feel the energy, a bit of pomp and show, some tradition is good, yes ?

I have no idea what they did for today's special, I'm sure the people attending had a good time (the ones with the good seats, anyway)

NONE of this crap has ANYTHING to do with the regular Army drill. It is some abominable concoction thought up by two sets of deadbeat, worthless policemen, and whoever dreamed it up should be shot.

As for the 'silly walk', I don't know what you mean. I need an answer; are you referring to the regular march, the quick march, the light infantry/rifles march or the slow march? Are you referring to the goose step? Are you referring to that unbelievable abortion that they have introduced into the Republic Day marchpast parades? Have you seen the very many different ways in which professionals on parade hold themselves? Have you seen the differences between the Americans on parade, the Germans, the Russians, the Chileans (yes, the Chileans, with Uhlan helmets and a quasi-goose step), the north Koreans, and the British?

Silly walk?

And DON'T get me started on the mess our stupid generals have made of our march music. I warn you, you will bitterly regret it.

BULLSHIT.

.
Well the experience involves seeing both sides doing
  1. vigorous marching,
  2. the flashing eyes,
  3. the clanging loudly of the gates
  4. Shouting slogans by people of both sides and number of flags they carry
All theatrical but high octane energy showcasing bravado, aggression and fearlessness.

 well we had debated this to death in the past many times. So if you were here by any other ID you must be knowing.

Anyway

I had been to Wagah and have watched this ceremony live there. The only interesting thing about this is that it attracts tourists mostly domestic and few foreigners. The crowd is so charged on both sides. It feels as if two teams are playing final of a sports :P.

Anyway for me the best thing was that when the officer on our side was showing us border and explaining I wanted to put one leg atleast on Indian side and he was yelling again and again miss please don't cross the line and at the end angrily looking too much embarrassed he said "kiya ap peshawar say hain?"

BULLSHIT.

hehehehehehe it is a good business. kabhi kabhi hum sochaty hain degree karnay say behtar tha wahgah ceremony main pop corns hee bech laitay

I'm talking about the one where they push their arms all the way up as they escort a dignitary etc seen around 1.30 timestamp in this video:

But thats a minor one compared to this kind of thing:

Hope you got the reference btw to the ministry of silly walks:

sorry about the laugh track old chap....the original one i remember didn't.

Are you referring to that unbelievable abortion that they have introduced into the Republic Day marchpast parades?

This one too (its what i described as the spot jogging march).

@Vergennes @Taygibay opinions needed!

How did he know you were from Peshawar, ma'am? From wanting to cross the border so casually? :D

What I hate about the ceremony is that it makes an exhibition of the men. How sad that they have to go through this charade, which has no dignity, no grace about it.

and women, had BSF women kicking things off on our side last I was there.

How sad that they have to go through this charade, which has no dignity, no grace about it.
right, so maybe ballets are more your thing, let the nationalists have their fun.

.
I am not so worried about the men in uniform. I know there have been instances in the past where emotions have run high and they have come to blows.

Also it did not miss my eyes that on the Pakistan side, besides the ceremonial gate and leg swinging guys, there were proper Rangers in combat uniform with guns. I did not see similar on our side but am ok if I am corrected. Was also surprised to see a Pakistani surd. Felt weird.

The junta on both side wearing caps and waving paper flags looked like they were enjoying themselves. Like on a picnic.

But I am worried about the slogans etc. Tempers might run high. People might lose their cool. There may be a day when both crowds overpower the few soldiers on both sides and clash.

Might get very ugly???
