More than that is needed. A cheap Indian car for the masses needs to be assembled in Pakistan. Lahore would be ideal site as parts could be transported from Amritsar. The Pakistani consumer would benefit from cheap car and help to break the Suzuki assembly mafia. The fact is how can Pakistan claim to have a auto industry when it does not even have the feedstock like steel industry? Our idea of steel industry is people like Nawaz who go around tearing up old rail tracks or breaking ships as scrap, melting it and caling it 'steel industry'. One Indian steel mill produces more steel then all of Pakistan does over ten years.

Since India is right next door, it has the iron ore, coal, steel industry, electrical industry, plastics industry etc all these are fedstock for auto industry. Therefore I think it's time Pakistan enjoyed the benefits of scale and opened up auto sector on the Wagah border.

Well sounds great, yet that is really selective approach. Business ain't work that way. :nono:

So, if Pakistan opened up to Indian auto industry, a market of 200 million people, your saying Tata etc would say 'no'? For them it would require minimum investment to grab a slice in Pakistan.

Tata or any other major business group do have enough leverage in policy decisions. That doesn't mean they make the rules. There are a lot of hurdles before that. And it won't be the auto industry alone I bet. And MFN status would be the very first requirement I guess. :-)

I guess we are going to have to waite a long time for detente between Pak and India for fully integrated auto industry in South Asia.

My family had impala. Later ambasaddor..then padmini followed by maruti 800 followed by cielo..and now i20.
I never knew i had all the classic cars

And I'm pretty sure there will be an invisible giant to play as a spoiler for sure. And it's absolutely fair in business. Who want to share a 200 Million market with a competitor next door. :azn::azn::azn:

I see that car now and it is pretty ok. I mean not that ugly. But the main question is where did the guys copied it from

The car is designed by Italian Pininfarina (owned by Mahindra), so they must have copied it from existing Chinese models like they do for Maserati and Ferraris.

Alturas is nothing but Mahindra subsidiary SsangYong's Rexton. Rexton launched in India a while ago, but didn't do well thanks to low brand recognition and so on. So they relaunched it as a Mahindra with some design changes.

The soon to be launched XUV300 is also a SsangYong, the Tivoli. Mahindra chopped off its behind to make it a sub-4m car for tax benefits.

Mahindra has done great and is one of the most forward looking companies in the world right now with precious subsidiaries, but leave it to them to deliver the ugliest designs.

But certainly, they shouldn't be mocked for launching rebadged cars from their own stable. It's the hallmark of a giant.

I like your thinking and attitude @Indus Pakistan , but politics is real sticky point between the two countries sadly...its not going to go away anytime soon.

You are very correct that Pakistan could benefit immensely from the assembly value addition it could do in a more integrated auto-supply component etc market with India (which would also benefit). It is somewhat a low hanging fruit for economic cooperation that could blossom to more down the road, but sadly we are both busy whacking the grass and weeds around the tree instead...and that seems to be more conducive for the politicians and elites.
