The Benazir Shaheed Volunteer Awards will be conferred upon volunteers by the Ministry of Youth Affairs to recognise their social services. The awards will be given out to mark the birthday of Benazir Bhutto falling on June 21.
The ministry officials told The News that the awards were aimed at motivating prospective volunteers to devote time to social work and creating awareness on the importance of community services.
The awards would include a medal, certificate and cash purses of Rs0.1 million, Rs50,000 and Rs25,000. Three awards will be given to candidates of each province whereas one award each will be presented to volunteers from AJK, Fata and Islamabad Capital Territory.
The official said that the last date for submission of applications, duly attested by a senator, MNA, MPA or DCO, was May 31. Fields are not restricted but would mainly be regarding the services to community and humanity and betterment of society.
He said that the awards were a tribute to the meritorious services of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed for the nation. They aim at inculcating her ideals among future generations, he said.
The official said that a high-powered committee comprising government functionaries and experts and headed by federal secretaries would hold the initial scrutiny. He pointed out that the volunteerism was ingrained in Pakistani society due to underlying ideals of Islam but its true potential had never been harnessed in the past.
