They will, eventually. Our Leopard 2's will serve for next 4 decades or so currently it's not really a pressing concern but when the funding is available they will do it.

Plus some parts may not be ready yet. As NG upgrade shares many sub-systems with Altay, It may take some time for those systems to mature.

There's no rush.

As LegionnairE said, The Leopard 2NG is like a German made but Turkish upgraded Altay variant tank carrying almost same subsystems, electronics and devices with Altay. It is on field trials before development of Altay is completed. It is because of accelerating the development periods of Altay in terms of electronic/FCS technologies.

Besides, As far as I know, Turkish Army wants upgraded Leopard 2NG in inventory but I don't know When will the serial production phase commenced...

Submarines are not the most suitable assets for rising our flag in foreign countries btw.
I'm expecting to see establishment of Turkish Mediterranean and Black Sea Fleets. Maybe additional funds to TFX. Turkish land vehicle industry can satisfy itself with exports.

Altay is a huge industrialization program of Turkish Republic and I expect to see the name of more than 100 Turkish big/small scale institutes manufacturing the parts for Altay in serial production phase. Thanks to Altay program, The institutes to be worked for Altay must improve their manufacturing skills and The orders will be placed step by step so,

The production is expected to exceed longer time periods with a slow production speed. Turkey won't hurry up in serial production phase because As I said Altay is a huge industrialization program and There are many seperate system development agreements proceeding in parralel with Altay program and The officials are planning to catch the production time table of Altay to provide those domestic strategic systems as soon as possible...

What are those strategic systems which slow down the production speed of Altay ?

-1500hp Domestic engine
-Altay transmission
-Active protection system called AKKOR
-Advanced hydrolic/suspension system technologies
-Advanced Heavy Armour blocks


To fulfill the stop-gap requirements of Turkish Army to keep the armour forces in active level until Altay replace the old tanks, Turkey goes huge upgrade programs such as Leopard 2NG...

Leopard 2NG is not only Aselsan's individual but also Turkish army's own upgrade program. Turkish army delivered a Leopard 2A4 to Aselsan which is in active service and The systems developed/manufactured, are assembled with Aselsan/TSK officials in Turkish Army's own factory. I mean The new hull and armour design to provide best protection, were the requirements of Turkish Army and Aselsan did its best to meet the requiements of Army. In serial production phase, The Leopard 2NG will be manufactured How Aselsan designed/developed it...

@Bordo Enes, NG upgrade will replace existing 120mm L44 guns of Leo2A4s with Altay's 120mm L55 gun, I was thinking we have about 440+ Leopard2A4s to be upgraded L44 guns that's going to be dismounted from Leo2s can be mounted to Leopard1Ts now is it clear?

+I don't think the Land Forces Command will ever order add-on armor for Leopard1s M60T was an emergency solution. But a new hard-kill system may come in order for them.

We have 1500+1500 M48s besides M60s Turkish land forces command is by far largest Patton series operator in the world. Especially M60A3s and M48A5T2s will remain in service for at least another decade.



Leopard 1s' equaivalents are british chieftain(which i LOVE) and M60 Patton by general. But i don't see other countries following such modernisation plans like this, if that's what you are asking. Volkan upgrade is focusing only on tank's interior and fire control system. It's because of Turkey's unique development in defence industry. Because of Aselsan to be percise.

Well that is possible yes but from what i know the Leopard2NG Upgraded will NOT include 120mm L55 Barrel it will maitain the L44... I was taking a break from defence issues and forums for about 2 months so i might be wrong though.

There maybe various reasons why L55 wasn't added to NG concept, for one thing it's MKE's field rather than Aselsan's. When the NG concept was made, L55 guns development was still in early stages. Now a good time has passed and MKE published testing images of L55 gun

As I know, no replacement for turrets in NG programme.

I think it is not scheduled the replacing of the l44 barrel. it would require a huge modification of the turret. the modernised leopard4 witout l55 barrel is more than sufficient.

Nice That tottaly made my day, In about after a decade we will have serious fire power. 1000 Altay with L55 combined with another 300 Leopard2NG also with L55. Damn that is some serious heavy metal....
