While Hindu right-wing groups in Gujarat have sought to bar the entry ofMuslimsat garba events to prevent 'Love Jihad' incidents, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has turned aggressive and is planning a worship of weapons andHindutvajagran (awareness) across the country during the Navratri festival for women to counter 'Love Jihad'.

The Navratri festival starts on October 13 and ends on 22.

The Sangh Parivar usesLove Jihadas a moniker for Muslim boys or men luring girls from Hindu or non-Islamic communities into love and subsequent marriage and religious conversion.

“We will organise a recitation of hymns like the Durga saptashati and shastrapujan (worship of arms) for women and girls,” VHP secretary Vyankatesh Abdeo told dna, adding this will be done in every district and every city across the country.

The VHP has also called on its supporters to chant the name of Lord Ram from 11.15 am to 12.30 pm on November 25 to pray for “eradicating the obstacles” in construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya, said Abdeo. The VHP is seeking a law for the construction of a Ram temple.

Abdeo said a Hindutva jagran will be conducted to counter Love Jihad. “Girls will be made aware of it to enable them to unite and counter this conspiracy. It (jagran and worship of weapons) will also give them confidence to defend themselves on their own,” he said Abdeo.

The campaign will be conducted during Navratri by the VHP’s women’s wing, Matrushakti and Durga Vahini. It will be held at 2,000 locations in India, of which 300 will be in Maharashtra, said Abdeo.

“When women come for the programme, we will put forth the problems faced (by Hindus)... including Love Jihad, terrorism, population explosion and women’s security,” said Meenakshi Pishve of Matrushakti. “Hindu girls are being enticed by Muslim boys. This is bad for Sanatan Dharma,” she said. Another Matrushakti member said the programme was meant to awaken women, with the ceremonial worship of weapons by girls serving to create confidence in their minds. "After all, women are an embodiment of shakti (power)... but don’t get their due in society," she added.

However, Shubha Shamim, state committee member of the CPM's All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), said this reflected a patriarchal mindset, which wanted to control the choices of girls and women. “Constitutionally, girls over 18 years and boys over 21 years have the right to choose their life partners. Caste and religion are secondary,” she said, adding these choices could go wrong even when girls chose a partner from their own communities.

Abdeo said a Sant Sammelan held during the recentKumbh Melaat Nashik saw resolutions on the Ram temple law, a nation-wide legislation to ban slaughter of cows and bullocks and for an end to untouchability. The VHP will also conduct programmes in October and November to train new volunteers and acclimatise them about the work of the organisation.

It had held a 'Ram Utsav' in March with religious discourses, ceremonies and processions being held to seek the construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya, which remains one of the centerpiece agendas of the Sangh Parivar.
