Violence in Rawapindi claims seven lives, 34 injured

Actually the thing was covered in social media by journalists. Hamid Meer claims that such stuff could not be aired due to the fear more clashes will take place but it is pretty clear who is the culprit here:

In any case, the mosque administrators have complained that media was not showing the dead bodies of students scattered in the seminary and took photos/ videos of the event itself. Thing will be out in a day or two.

The excuse that Matmi jaloos was incited by some mullah is ridiculous, its exactly the same thing Sunni extremist claim (with ref to first 3 claiphs and bibi Ayesha) it does not work for them and it won't work for Shi'ites.

Now that is much more pertinent than some sectarian rant. It seems that the armed(for their ritual) Shia group took advantage of their sharp tools. Old enmity with Madressa or genuine payback attack?

Deadly attack on Shia procession in Pakistan
At least eight killed and 30 wounded when gunmen opened fire on a Shia Muslim procession during annual day of mourning.

Eight people were killed when gunmen opened fire on a Shia Muslim religious procession in Pakistan, hospital officials said, in what appeared to be the latest incident of spiralling sectarian violence.

More than 30 others were wounded in the attack on Friday, which began when the procession passed a Sunni seminary.

Rock throwing quickly degenerated into gunfire, said staff at the district hospital headquarters in the city of Rawalpindi.

The Shia Muslims dragged the Sunnis out of the seminary after hearing the shouted insults and killed them, police officer Afzal Hussain told the AFP news agency.

They also set dozens of shops outside the seminary on fire, he said.

Police tried to stop the clash, but officers were wounded as the two sides threw stones at each other, Hussain said.

An army unit based in Rawalpindi eventually reached the scene and took control.

The Shia Muslims were marking Muharram, an annual Shia day of mourning to mark the death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammad.

Many join long processions where they flagellate, beat or cut themselves to show their grief.

Rawalpindi is a few minutes' drive from the capital, Islamabad, and home to the headquarters of Pakistan's army.

Further details of the attack were difficult to ascertain since the government suspended mobile phone services in much of Pakistan during Muharram to try to foil suicide bombers.

Attacks on Pakistan's Shia, who make up about a fifth of the 180 million population, have worsened in recent years.

Most of the attacks are the work of Sunni Muslim fighters, many of whom are affiliated with banned groups such as the Taliban or Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which wants to drive all Shia Muslims out of Pakistan.

Hundreds of Shia Muslims were killed in bombings and other attacks last year, including children gunned down on their way to school and doctors heading for work.

I think they were in greater numbers and took the opportunity, though Sunnis in rwp are really seething at the moment. More at media then anyone, media really did a job on them. For example this picture is used in Al-Jazeera and other websites and it looks like the wounded man is a Shi'ite victim:

This next picture is taken at spot - which shows another story that he was being beaten by Shi'ites:

Sunnis were all set to burn down the Imam Bargah (as in retaliation of mosque) - Lets hope things settle down or this can really get out of hand. Though media did the right thing by censoring these parts but how will they stop people from sharing videos and pictures on social websites is anyone's guess.

i am happily looking it :D
there is nothing critical situation its madrasa situation  shia was already taking blood bath so sunnies join them :enjoy:

I heard that the Shia mourners burned the deobandi mosque with people inside.

The reason for calling in army so early was so that the news of this doesn't spread. Else Taliban would be having a field day.

From Photographs, It seems to a Old city with tradition. Let us hope that this old buildings do not destroy in violence. Let us hope that the violence may not spread and come in control soon.

Imran I am sorry to say but even being a senior member, your posts are too low quality, outright pathetic and nonsensical. Slitting throats, burning people alive and arson in never justified for whatever reason. It is something which is unacceptable in all circumstances and should be condemn instead of being cheered.

Have some shame. A few of your countrymen lost their lives.

Time time has come once we have to decide collectively in good spirit to stop any type of processions political or religious, Sunni or Shia, those be confined to open places where people come and perform rituals whichever they feel like or perform those in mosques, madrasahs or imambargahs.

Here in Rawalpindi we are not allowed to GO outside... Curfew is imposed... Shias has slaughtered many sunni people from Knife and dangerous tools ... Situation is not good.... I think sunni will take revengue. Its impossible to impose curfew for months..... Police failed.... Rangers failed.................. Right now, Army has taken over conrol. ...

It better not become the starting point of Shia-Sunni War in Pakistan!

And the maulvi of that madrassah should not have used the dregotarty remarks. A hyped crowd of zealots could easily kill any one

I think He doesn't mean what he wrote. He seems to be too disappointed with the violence. It seems to be a disappointed sarcasm.

I would have to commend the government for at least controlling the backlash, they have imposed a curfew for a reason and kept the media coverage to a minimum or else more chaos would have ensued.

Things are much much worse than being shown on TV.
