With its 12-hour bandh call paralysing life in Darjeeling, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) on Friday maintained that there was “no other alternative” but a separate state of Gorkhaland. GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, who has been booked along with party chief Bimal Gurung under non-bailable sections, said: “People of the hills now want nothing but Gorkhaland. There is no other alternative. We are hearing that the government is trying to frame charges against our leaders and arrest them. If they dare to do so, the crisis will worsen.”

On Army being called in after protests erupted in Darjeeling against the “imposition” of Bengali by the government, Giri said: “Police lathicharged protesters and then some miscreants damaged property.” The party is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Saturday to prepare a road map for a renewed stir.

“The situation is not good. Now, I think we will have to prepare for prolonged agitation and even bandhs. This is just the beginning. May be soon we will have to stockpile food items. There is a chance that prices of food items will skyrocket,” said Soni Chetri, a resident of Kurseong. Many locals, who said memories of prolonged bandh and violence during the 2013 Gorkhaland stir was still afresh in their minds, anticipated a re-run.

GJM leaders in Darjeeling said they were now launching a decisive movement for creating a separate state for the Nepali-speaking Gorkhas

Kolkata: Darjeeling was plunged into a fresh crisis with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) calling for an indefinite strike from Monday. Capping hours of deliberation on Saturday, the GJM announced that all government offices and banks will be shut from Monday.

Schools, colleges, transport services, shops and hotels have been exempted from the strike. Bank branches will be allowed to offer services on Mondays and Thursdays, said GJM spokesperson Roshan Giri. The GJM also announced that it will not allow any outdoor signage to be written in Bengali in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts—only Nepali and English will be allowed.

Leaders said GJM was now launching a decisive movement for creating a separate state for the Nepali-speaking Gorkhas, but at the same time it is mindful of not disrupting the lives of common people. The target, they said, is to paralyze the functioning of the state machinery. Even the offices of the Gorkha territorial administration (GTA) will remain closed, Giri said.

The GJM has written to the centre and has called an all-party meeting on 13 June to explain why the party is now seeking the separation of Gorkhaland from West Bengal. Party leaders will seek an audience with the prime minister soon to press for its demands. The GJM will run a signature campaign to establish popular support for its demand for a separate state.

People who have little or no idea about how the politics of the hills works, will only cheer with such fantasy that this is just another secessionist movement in India.

Election for Gorkhaland territorial Administration is just months away, and Mamata Banerjee whose party had performed impressivly in the last Municipal election has ordered a six member audit panel to probe the alleged corruption in GTA which is controlled by GJM.

Once Gurung gets assurance of his financial safety and right to rule the hill, all the shouts and slogans for a separate state (Not country, as op assumed falsely) will disappear in thin air. This is traditional Indian way of keep territorial integrity. Don't get the slightest impression that hill is going away from Bengal, let alone India.
