VIEW : Siachen: a costly war for Pakistan and India

well guess what INDIA CAN AFFORD to be in SIACHEN due to a blooming economy! Pakistan CANNOT AFFORD to be there due to a crippled ECONOMY.

IF PAKISTAN had the upper hand in terms of higher ground INDIA MIGHT have considered to pull back. but having better ground & more money there is no way india will be willing to pull back!

sdo CLEARLY either PAKISTAN should keep the status quo or try & wrestle the siachen heights away. the latter will lead to global Condemnation.

smart thing to do is keep status quo until Pakistan is in a position to BETTER NEGOTIATE with the enemy.

Your plan is very insightful and carefully thought out, must appreciate it.. However, pray tell me when Pakistan will be in position to "BETTER NEGOTIATE"? ;)

.
if thats the case mate then why is it that its Pakistan who keeps claiming that we need to settle this issue? are you that concerned for us?

Its called Peace offer not settling.

First, encourage peace in Kashmir, then maybe we will think of Siachin..

Sooner then you think
Duh, India has heard this dialogue for 6 decades now.. Ayub khan even famously said before the 65 war it is now or never, you say it does not apply here?

You can Thank the Americans as we had an open offer in 62 to go finish it but our sold out Generals decide other wise.

As far as money is concerned, the amount spent on Siachen is practically peanuts. No article fails to mention the cost of holding Siachen as high for India. They apply Pakistani standards.

The cost to India is close to $300 million.. That's one tenth of what a season of IPL makes... Bah!

Interesting Fact:::
Pakistan was planning to take this place, Indian agencies got there intention and failed there objective. Pakistan tried many time to take J&K by sending there regular army, and defeated everytime. Still they blame us.

"Islamabad then committed an intelligence blunder, according to a now retired Pakistani army colonel. "They ordered Arctic-weather gear from a London outfitters who also supplied the Indians," says the colonel. "Once the Indians got wind of it, they ordered 300 outfits—twice as many as we had—and rushed their men up to Siachen.""

Kyon miyan,You bought the stuff from the same shop frm where we bought it???

Pakistan's Misadventure in Sia-chin

Further attempts to reclaim positions were launched by Pakistan in 1987, 1990, 1995, 1996 and even in early 1999, just prior to the Lahore Summit. The 1995 attack by Pakistan SSG was significant as it resulted in 40 casualties for Pakistan troops without any changes in the positions.

Every time pakistani sent there SSG, Everytime our RR (Ordinary soldiers killed them)..

See what Musshy (***** ) did ...
" in 1987, when an attempt was made by Pakistan to dislodge India from the area. The attack was masterminded by Pervez Musharraf (later President of Pakistan) heading a newly raised elite SSG commando unit raised with United States Special Operations Forces help in the area."

Some more Facts:

"One of the factors behind the Kargil War in 1999 when Pakistan sent infiltrators to occupy vacated Indian posts across the Line of Control was their belief that India would be forced to withdraw from Siachen in exchange of a Pakistani withdrawal from Kargil. Both sides had previously desired to disengage from the costly military outposts but after the Kargil War, India decided to maintain its military outposts on the glacier, wary of further Pakistani incursions into Kashmir if they vacate from the Siachen Glacier posts without an official recognition from Pakistan of the current positions."

'Enemy'? Are you talking about the TTP or India? If India, then a better choice of words would have been 'adversary'. :P

The article published is not exactly a letter of request from the GOP that Indian members are behaving like a cat on a hot tin roof,
Before resorting to chest thumping and feeling all high and mighty, you need to be acutely reminded that on the contrary GOI also wants to resolve Sir Creek issue with Pakistan, wonder what's the urgency there, can the Indian economy not sustain it, what percentage of IPL is spent for maintaining security of these marshlands, or maybe the IA is crumbling under the pressure :blah: :blah: :blah:.......remember the old saying...the bigger they are, they harder they fall.
If GOI is keen to resolve one issue then why can't GOP put up another suggestion, but i guess there is an acute absence of some introspection by Indian members.

.
^^^^I dont see Indian Govt or Army officers suggesting to Vacate those lands UNCONDITIONALLY??

.
Sir Creek etc are all part of CBMs which is the buzz word these days.

Notice, nothing has changed in Indian stand for decades on the essentials.

- No out side interference or mediation in J&K - strictly bi lateral.

- No come down on Siachen till authentication.

- Construction of Dams.

and so many more.

.
It's all a matter of time.
Porbandar: Defence Minister A K Antony on Saturday said that efforts were on to resolve the disputed Sir Creek issue with Pakistan.

"The dialogue process is on to resolve the issue with the neighbouring country, but can't tell any time limits," Antony told media-persons after inaugurating Remote Operating Station (ROS) of the Coastal Radar Network at Porbandar on Saturday.

Talks on with Pak to resolve Sir Creek issue: Antony
