Vietnam's largest mobile carrier to launch commercial 5G services in June

(Reuters) - Vietnam's largest telecommunication company, Viettel, will launch commercial 5G mobile services from June this year, the company said on Friday.

The military-run company said in a statement it would use 5G network equipment and software developed itself, adding that it has become the sixth firm the world to produce 5G network equipment after Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei [HWT.UL], Samsung Electronics and ZTE.

The statement came after Viettel conducted its first trial video call on its 5G network the same day. Viettel said it would develop both civilian and military services based on its 5G platform.

Viettel has completed the integration of the first 5G network broadcasting infrastructure in the area around Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi and successfully tested broadcasts on all bands licensed by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

Connection speeds in the tests ranged from 600 - 700Mbps, equivalent to the speed offered by Verizon’s 5G network customers in the US.




Verizon previously launched its “5G Home” internet service in four test markets last October. However, it’s not true 5G service and the company has reportedly halted expansion of the service until actual 5G hardware is available.

While it’s unclear which cities will see Verizon’s true 5G service first, it will likely start the rollout sometime soon. Verizon partnered with Samsung on its new Galaxy S10 5G smartphone expected to arrive in the first half of this year. As for Apple, the company isn’t expected to include a 5G modem in its iPhones until 2020. But with the 5G rollout from Verizon and other carriers likely being slow, actual 5G coverage will hopefully be solid for many consumers by the time iPhone supports the new standard.

“We combined two 5G carriers and established a new world record by reaching speeds of above 2.92 Gbps in our live 5G test network,” said Yusuf Kıraç, Türk Telekom’s CTO. “We are also the first operator to experiment with the 5G New Radio Carrier Aggregation Technology (C-Band NR Carrier Aggregation), which doubles the 5G link speed. Türk Telekom will continue to lead the development of all new generation technologies that our country needs in the future, as we do today.
