Vietnam's six Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines purchased from Russia may present a serious threat to the People's Liberation Army Navy's five Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines operating in the disputed South China Sea, reports the Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language military magazine based in Canada.

The fourth Kilo-class submarine, codenamed HQ-185 Da Nang, arrived at Cam Ranh Port in southern Vietnam on June 30. It was launched on March 28 last year at the Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg. After a sea trial in the Baltic Sea, the Da Nang began its journey to Vietnam on May 17 aboard a Dutch-registered cargo ship. Vietnam spent a total amount of US$2.6 billion to buy six Kilo-class submarines from Russia in 2009.

After Da Nang, the People's Navy of Vietnam will take delivery of its last two Kilo-class submarines by 2016. The Kilo-class is considered one of the world's quietest diesel submarines. It is designed particularly for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare and could be used against the PLA Navy in the disputed South China Sea according to the Diplomat, an online current affairs magazine based in Tokyo.

When Vietnam's Kilo-class subs begin routine patrols in the Gulf of Tonkin, China's five Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines based in Hainan's Yalong Bay will face a serious threat. Kanwa Defense Review said the Vietnamese navy could blockade Yalong Bay to prevent the PLA submarines from leavin6g their base.

China have been and will continue to build naval warships, submarines and aircraft carriers in the future. However, these are not and will not be any threat to Vietnam. These ships will be used for protecting China's sovereignty, and interests aboard; including stop pirates and merchant ship escorts from south china sea all the way to the somalia waters, evacuating civilians from war zones, and relationship building with other countries.

Vietnam vs. China

same as

Argentina vs. Britain over Falklands

Probably a lot worse for the Vietnamese than Argentina as in the Islas Malvinas

Which will join the Vietnamese? Japan, India? or USA?

The only difference is that the British have had a long time legacy of great Naval Prowess in modern history.

Britain has an unprecedented naval history , whose power was unrivaled for almost 3 centuries. China , specifically the PLAN, is largely untested in an extra-hemispherical condition and have largely remained within their borders for most of the PRC's and the PLAN's existence. They have had no experience or exposure to combating a large naval military force or have experience in a combined land - naval expeditionary mission.

The only Navy in Asia, specifically the Pacific Region, that has a history and legacy of this, as well as carrier based warfare is the Japanese Maritime Defense Force, which is the Legacy of the Great Imperial Japanese Navy [Dai Nippon Teikoku Kaigun]

The PLA and PLAAF are tested and battle hardened though. Does that mean its better to launch an airborne/ground assault on Vietnam and then trade their capital back for their islands?

Can we Dock our Akula 2 in Cam Ranh Bay in future ?

Our Vietnamese friends :D

Lol China is in the process of selling around 3 times the entire inventory of Vietnamese submarines to Pakistan and Thailand.

Please don't make me laugh

The PLAAF and PLA are not the PLAN.

Naval wise, it PLAN has never engaged in a major operation aside from exercises.

The ROCN at least tried to resist the Imperial Navy before it was annihilated by the Nihon Kaigun.

When you look at a fight with the Vietnamese most likely the Japanese will find the best excuse to go to war in the battles alongside the Viets

That is why they are ditching the so called "pacifists law" and preparing for aggression beyond their borders
They can fool nobody
