Vietnam was part of China colony in the past, Vietnam was a vassal state of China for thousand of yrs, how many invasion by China for Vietnam to be China vassal state? Mongo did invade and occupied China for over 80 yrs, Manchu did invaded and ruled China for 200 yrs, empire enlarge their territory through military invasion. the reason for the war is fairly simple, vietnam picked the soviets over china despite china provided far more support for vietnam than the soviet. vietnam then, with the backing of soviets, wanted to dominate southeast asia. china intervened even with mutual defense treaty between soviets and vietnam.

china and the soviet each stationed a million troops near the sino-soviet border. in the end the soviet didnt honor their treaty obligation to defend vietnam against china. vietnam miscalculated.
