Vietnam wants India to 'rise quickly' in region - The Times of India

MELBOURNE: Concerned over China's assertiveness in the South China sea, Vietnam wants India to "rise quickly" in the region.

"We are deeply concerned by Chinese assertiveness in the South China sea. The Chinese navy is acting without provocation. These decisions seem to be taken by the Chinese leadership at the highest level," said ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, president of Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV).

Quy said there was not much clarity in the Obama administration. "That is why we want India should rise quickly. We have great expectations from India," he said.

The remarks were made at a round table meeting of DAV held here yesterday.

DAV is said to carry out strategic research in international relations and foreign policy, as well as serve as a think-tank for foreign policy for the ministry of foreign affairs, the party and the state.

The meeting was held for the delegates to share information with Australian scholars around regional security issues such as US-China relations, maritime issues in the Indo pacific region and discuss more broadly Australia's engagement with Asia.

Reacting to DAV president's comment, Australia-India Institute inaugural director Amitabh Mattoo said: "Chinese assertiveness is bordering on aggressiveness and there seems to be a pattern to Chinese Maritime behaviour."

Clearly, Beijing believes that its time has come and it wants to exercise hegemony over the whole region. But this behaviour is short sighted and counter productive, he said.

Mattoo said China was losing the trust of its neighbours and losing all friends.

"Outside North Korea and Pakistan, there is not even one state that is not concerned by Chinese foreign policy behaviour," he added.

. . .
It's true that all those nations who feel threatened by increasing aggressiveness of China are looking upto India .

India is the only country which can possibly stand up to China .

It is with this belief US decided to forego decades of animosity with India and decided to forge close ties with India

.
India must not be too emotional handling this situation.

We need to have good relations with Both Vietnam and China.

And China must understand that they should stop such kind of policy if they want Asia to develop peacefully.
Vietnam should also make good relations with Russia.

.
In terms of sheer size of land mass , population , economy , military might , strategic depth , cultural ties ...India is the only country which can check China's unrestrained behavior ....

and for this reason China has adopted rather soft approach towards India .

India is at crucial cross roads of emerging politics in East Asia ...

This is the time to embolden our look East policy and use the anti china sentiment towards India's benefit .

Checking China's might is also in India's greatest interest

Recent change in China's stance towards India is only temporary ...
Not that I am talking about taking confrontational approach towards China ....but India need to harness the rising Anti China sentiment towards its own benefit .

Growth potential of East China is huge ...and India needs market as well as friends to take on china both economically and diplomatically ...

We must accelerate pace of our Look east policy ...

It's time for Embrace East policy now ....

lets all together join hands and annihilate china off the map !

Most probably US asked ministers in vietnam to make such statements to involve India in regional wars. But of course we should take this opportunity for our Navy's interest but only to safe level.

Please edit your post .

It's an open invitation to trolls ...

and it's not right .

This is not just question of Navy ....

This is a much bigger question ...

India has to balance itself in ensuing tug of war ....

at some point of time ....in fact many times in future India will find itself pitted against China ( willy-nilly and unwittingly ) ...

By navy, I meant all strategic and economic advancement. Look east policy is an ongoing process but let us not take steps in sentiments by sending war fleets, or installing IRBM's there. Rather if India can manage to create its defence and goods market in the east that will be more fruitful. We have more to show the east than China has.

India has to prepare itself for those situation to stand against China ...while defending its won interests.

If We let China run its own fancy in South China sea to established unopposed supremacy ...sooner or later its going to turn against India for Arunachal Pradesh ...

So far China's strategy has been to deal with all countries separately where it can overwhelm these countries individually with its sheer brute power .

China would never like an Anti China alliance to develop in East asia ...

We have to recognize this game and plan our moves accordingly ...

Well it's not question of our emotions ...but emotions running in this region that India should work upon.

Right now there is an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty ....
Countries like Vietnam ,Phillipines with which we did not enjoy very close relations in past are now open and willing . we must make use of this opportunity .

If China can use anti india sentiment in Pakistan ,Sri lanka and so on towards its benefit ..why we can't ?

Off course we can ..and we should ...
