The signing of a joint statement expanding the partnership between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in 2014 has opened the door to new long-term cooperative efforts in outer space technology between Vietnam and Japan.

Accordingly, the two sides are making joint efforts to ensure the progress of infrastructure development and high-quality human resources training in Vietnam to produce one of the leading space centres in Southeast Asia.

The pair will make full use of their respective skills and resources for future collaboration in remote sensing, small satellite production, global satellite positioning system application, and ensuring the construction progress of the Vietnam Space Centre project in Hoa Lac hi-tech park in Hanoi, which began in September 2012.

The project is the crux of the aerospace technological application and research strategy of Vietnam through 2020, with a total investment of 54 billion JPY (over 452 million USD) primarily sourced from the official development assistance (ODA) of the Japanese Government.

It consists of three main components: technical infrastructure and equipment; receiving and transferring technology; and human resources training.

Once operational in 2020, the centre will master small earth observation satellite technology, observe the entire territory of Vietnam unimpeded by weather conditions through the use of modern radar technology, and most importantly, facilitate the building and analysis of satellite photo data used for monitoring and early warning detection of natural disasters.

Vietnam and Japan have strengthened cooperation in outer space science and technology since 2006. Hundreds of Vietnamese scientists and IT experts received training at Japanese science and technology institutes, Tokyo University, and Osaka University, over the past decade.

The two countries also successfully co-organised the 20th Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) conference in Hanoi in 2013.

The bilateral collaboration has also expanded and deepened over the past 40 years in economics, education, training, and other fields.

In recent years, Japan has become a key strategic partner to Vietnam across sectors, especially in ODA provision and investment.

Vietnam attends Jenesys 2.0 science-technology event in Japan

Vietnam’s 76-member delegation set off on January 12 for the Science and Technology programme under the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths 2.0 (JENESYS 2.0), to be held in Japan from January 12-22.

The participants are students with outstanding research activities selected from 11 universities nationwide.

Nguyen Manh Cuong, Vice Director of Institute of Applied Technology under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said the programme will help to inspire Vietnamese students and young researchers’ passion in scientific research.

So far, more than 250 Vietnamese students and young researchers have participated in the programme, which is part of the cooperation framework between Japan and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

I would like to see further developments between Japan and Vietnam -- especially for the use of satellites in informational gathering for weather-related issues. :)

This is old news.

Vietnam private satellite to be launched from Japan.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 18:30

A miniature satellite made by Vietnamese telecom giant FPT will be launched into orbit on July 21, VnExpress reported Tuesday.

F-1, a 1 kg CubeSat -- so called because they have a volume of exactly one liter or 1,000 cubic centimeters -- will blast off along with three other satellites aboard a rocket to be launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency from the Tanegashima Space Center south of Kyushu.

The launch is to test the satellite's ability to orbit in space and send signals to the ground station. F-1 is also designed to take low-definition photos of the Earth (640x480).

Once the satellite, produced by FSpace, FPT University's aerospace research laboratory, in cooperation with the US-owned Nanoracks Company, performs the designated functions, it will test more complicated functions like acting as an SMS entrepôt.

Experts said if the trial launch is successful, FPT will become the first private company in Vietnam to make a satellite.

Officials are excited about the upcoming launch

Nguyen Dang Vang, vice chairman of the National Assembly's Science, Technology and Environment Committee, said while on a visit to the lab last month that F-1's success would be important for maritime surveillance and prevention of wildfires.

Phan Xuan Dung, chairman of the committee, said he believed the launch would be successful, adding it would help enhance national security.

VnExpress said F-1 would also carry messages from young Vietnamese around the world into space.

So far nearly 4,000 people have sent their messages to http://fspace.edu.vn/?page_id=31&lang=vi, it said.

Vietnam's first satellite, Vinasat-1, went into the orbit in 2008, and the second was launched last May. Both belong to the state-owned Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group.

yes, my friend, we need more cooperation in space. Japan has great expertise and experiences. I like this project. ready to launch (I mean not yet but later): two japanese sattelites for VN: ASNARO 2

weight 500kg each, designed by NEC Corp., one is optical and one is hyperspectral, X-band radar, highresolution camera (can resolve objects as small as a half-meter (20 inches) across), optical sensor, $0.6b each, financed by JP government´s ODA.

the first sattelite (assembled in JP) will be launched in 2017, the second (assembled in VN) for 2020. launch vehicle is a modified R-36M (Satan) missile, which was used as Soviet Unions´ ICBM carrying nuclear warheads, being conducted by Russian Strategic Rocket Forces :D We can use the sattelites for civil purposes, OR to observe Chinese military installations and activities :-)

Wishing you guys all the best.

Vietnam has seen and braved though what many other countries would collapse facing.

You have proven your will power and you will rise again as a prosperous country.

Japan and India will help you wherever our countries can.

I always have a strong feeling, Japan government has willing to do anything anti-China.

Hope wars is not a necessary option of being peace.

What Vietnam can offer in such a partnership? Detour ODA fund back to JAXA? Pointless move.

Vietnam have human resources, good enough. Vietnam also have plan and fund for aerospace technology. And the last and most important, Vietnam have the demand. Japan is a newbie in space group, need customer for this new technology.
This relationship is a win-win relationship.

This cooperation is for development, Friendship and peace.

What is anti-China here ?

China received 40 bill US$ ODA Loan from JCA. This Loan is just stopped recently.
