There are 2 empires that really captured most of India which Hindus got on the platter in 1947 and none of them were practicing Hindus or Brahmanism.
Mauryan empire and Mughals. MAuryan Empire was of Vaishya origin lesser caste than Brahmin and kshatriya occupying most of the resources in India although roughly 17-18% of population. Chandragupta Maurya was a Jain and his grandson Asoka a buddhist. Nanda empire ruler was half Shudra.
Mughals actually made India one territory followed by British. India 9if become a Hindu state would disintegrate into pieces like its past.
