Veteran Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah - who was criticised on Twitter for his comments during former foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri's book launch - said he was targeted for being a Muslim.

Expressing his dismay over the controversy that has erupted over his participation in the event in Mumbai on Monday, the actor said it was the first time that he was reminded of his Muslim identity.

"My name is Naseeruddin Shah and I believe that's why I was targeted. It really pains me to say this. I have never ever been aware of my identity until now," the 66-year-old actor told a private TV channel.

The book launch was attended - among others - by noted lawyer and historian AG Noorani, journalist Dileep Padgaonkar and Naseeruddin Shah, who were panelists at the event. The book was launched amid strong protests by Shiv Sena.

When asked about his view on writers returning their awards protesting against what they believe was a climate of rising intolerance in India under the present government, Shah said, "I wish that the protest had been made through their work. I wish those writers, instead of returning their awards, had written more strongly on what is happening to India in protest."

personally i dont think that there is a death of secularism (not sickularism) or victimization of the minorities as a wholesale phenomenon.
its only the overly loud modiz toadiz (no disrespect to our PM thoh) and their saffron biatches who keep on barking endlessly ( and also bite sometimes).
but the point is naseer has nothing to fear, as for 1 of the morons, 100s of sane ppl roam in this country.

A feeling of insecurity is unfortunate. Paranoia, insecurity...these depress people. He needs a shrink.

Naseer is a very good actor, in fact a class actor and he must concentrate in this fag end of his carrier on good films instead of commenting about politics, ife he has been criticized by some on tweeter then being in public life you get applause and criticism both and learn to live with it

Secular india lolzzz

Top 3 actors (Shahrukh, Salman, Amir) in bollywood are Muslims. They never complained that they feel insecure.

Also is it remotely possible in Lollywood for a Hindu actor to shine ?

I don't know what is the definition of insecurity in India. He had a wonderful career,he eared lots of money,he married a Hindu girl. He is respected by Indian people who are Hindus mostly.I don't think he was ever attacked in any ways.Saharukh khan,Irfan khan,Aamir khan,Salman khan, dilip kumar etc all are Muslims yet they earned billion of money from Hindus.I don't know how much secure they want to be India can not provide z+ security to actors If anyone not only Muslim will go to Pakistan and tell that alll indians are brainwashed then what can you expect from Indian people. "ab tum kisi ko cutiya bhi kho aur wo tab bhi tumhari respect krey ye to tum hi demanding ho rhe ho na"
