The Field Evaluation Trials for the Very Short Range Air Defense (VHSORAD) system acquisition being considered by the Indian Army are set to take place in India in the middle of May.

StratPost understands that four Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have been selected for the trials which will take place in India for an initial order estimated to be worth INR 27,000 crore (USD 5.4 billion) for over 800 launchers and over 5,000 missiles.

The army has selected the French MBDA’s Mistral and Swedish Saab’s RBS 70 for the trials, besides systems offered by Russia’s Rosorboronexport and South Korea’s LIG Nex1. At least two of the four selected companies had asked for significant delays in trials, which were denied by the army.

The Thales Starstreak system, which will be on display at DefExpo in New Delhi later this week, was also a contender but some reports indicate it to have been disqualified in the technical evaluation.

^^ Akash is medium range SAM

it seems VSHORAD as complimentary system to M 1 Tunguska

and its VSHORAD not VHSORAD as in thread title

. .
these are manpads - shoulder launched anti aircraft missiles.
I think the army will stick with the russians on this one - the newest variant of Igla ( Igla S ) is no doubt being fielded by them - and none of the other competitors has much of an edge against it.

.
They should have picked FIM-92 Stinger for trial too... No idea why they didn't included this one.

. .
If you compare FIM-92 Stinger with Igla S... which one you think has edge...

.
I thought US stinger was also participating....what happened ??? Again ToT ??? US needs to get over itself, VSHORAD isn't a game changing product and considering the size of the deal, i would say they should have relaxed the norms for India.

I hear MBDA Mistral is the favorite. Saab's RBS70 is with Pakistan armed forces and so i doubt IA will go for it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also whats the development in the MRSAM and QRSAM front ??? IA is looking forward to purchase them in huge numbers, especially MRSAM so as to fill the gap till Barak enters the service.

Also does anybody knows whether IA is operating Spyder or not ???I mean in 2009-2010 there were reports of IA and MOD even allocated the money for it but nothing whether they actually went for the deal or not. If IA purchased it then how many systems were finallly purchased and there are reports of further orders for Spyder to be placed by indian armed forces, how big this order will be ???

Indian description is twisted , or maybe its just me who can't make any sense out of this term. All of these weapons are known as PADS [Point air defense Systems] or for laymen MANPADs.

Can you give a VHSORAD scenario?

Check up what saab (swedish) calls it:
RBS 70 NG New Generation Air Defence VSHORAD System

"The new accurate, reliable and flexible RBS 70 NG VSHORAD system with 24/7 all-target capability has been developed for any combat situation."

Check out what MBDA (french) calls it:
Missile systems, defence systems - MBDA missiles

"A comprehensive and unrivalled range of surface-to-air solutions to both short and very short range air defence system (SHORAD/VSHORAD) requirements and medium/long range air defence needs is presented. "

Check out what the us army calls it:
SHORAD battalion and battery operations - United States. Dept. of the Army - Google Books
Short Range Air Defense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD) is a term used to describe a group of anti-aircraft weapons and tactics that have to do with defense against low-altitude air threats, primarily helicopters and low-flying close air support aircraft such as the A-10 or MiG-27."

So yea, seems like it's just you who can't make any sense out of it.

Just another side of the same bloody coin , nothing but a new fancy name for old toys. Hail market strategies.

Dude, that name has been in use for decades, at least since 1974, probably before. It's just that you are hearing of it now.

First you said Indian description is twisted and that everyone else calls it manpads. I showed you that all countries use that term. Now you are saying it is a new term for marketing strategies. You can find scholarly articles about shorads since at least the early 70s. The term has been common in military parlance before most people on this forum were born.

So in future, make sure if it is really India using new terms, or that you just haven't heard these terms before.

Added later: Britain used SHORAD regiments as far back as WW2:

Think of it as a 2012 spec version of the Stinger MANPAD

Indian Army Does Not operate Spyder SAM
Indian Airforce operates 18 Spyder Systems with some 600 Missiles
