An Arabic word with a literal meaning of "one who witnesses," coming from the root ش ه د "witness." The reason why a Shaheed is called a witness is that in Islamic theology, a Shaheed is one who witnesses over mankind the primacy of Islam. He becomes an exalted figure, who even bypasses yawm al Qiyamat/Judgement Day and goes straight to Jannat/Paradise.

Related also to the word for the Islamic declaration of faith called شهادة meaning "profession (of faith)".

Therefore a Non-Muslim can NEVER be a Shaheed, as according to the Islamic faith they are destined for Hellfire. As for the oppressors and tyrants who are fighting Muslims, they have a very low place in Jahannum/Hellfire.
