DEHRADUN: Two Army jawans were killed while a third is missing after their check-post was hit by an avalanche in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, which has faced heavy snowfall over the last two days.

According to Pithoragarh DM Sushil Kumar, the mishap took place on Monday at the Sialak border checkpost, which was manned by jawans of the Kumaon Scouts regiment.

"Of the eight jawans who were posted at the checkpost on the Indo-Nepal border, two were killed while five others were rescued safely.

"One jawan is missing and a search is on for him," Kumar said, adding that the higher reaches of the district have received heavy snowfall in the past two days.

Meanwhile, police said that in a separate incident on Monday, one person died in a house collapse caused by a landslide at Kapkot in Bageshwar district.

Three soldiers of Kumaon Scouts died after getting trapped in an avalanche in Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.

According to sources, eight soldiers were trapped in the avalanche of whom three are dead.

The incident occurred near Sialak border outpost, the sources said.
