I want to start this topic for discussion. As we know PN is a small force and its combat radius and sphere of activities demand mostly littoral combat ships and some ocean going vessels. Modern day warfare is platform intensive in the sense that with the advent of stand off ammunition ships are more in harms way than previously. PN also has tried to concentrate on smaller platforms for fear that the loss of a bigger platform will be more demoralizing than the loss of a smaller platform. Looking at the platform it is quite well equipped and may fulfill the littoral combat fleet needs of PN quite adequately. The F22s could then venture out into the ocean and do the job they are supposed to do.
The question posed is whether this platform has any utility for the PN or not? and is its integration in keeping with the general orbat of action of the PN?

Type 056 Jiangdao is a new class of stealth corvettes being built by four Chinese shipbuilders to replace the ageing Type 037 fleet of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy.

The PLA Navy plans to procure 20 corvettes in the first batch. It currently operates ten Type 056 ships, while the remaining vessels are in various stages of construction.

The Jiangdao Class corvette can be deployed in patrol, escort, search-and-rescue, surveillance, exclusive economic zone (EEZ) protection, electronic warfare (EW), fishery resources protection, anti-aircraft warfare (AAW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASUW) operations.

Construction of Jiangdao Class corvettes
The stealth corvette class is under construction at Wuchang, Huangpu, Hudong-Zhongua and Liaonan shipyards.

The lead ship in class, Bengbu (582), was rolled out in May 2012 and began sea trials in November 2012. The vessel entered service with the East Sea Fleet in February 2013. The second frigate, Huizhou (596), was launched in June 2012 and commissioned into the Hong Kong Garrison in July 2013.

The third vessel, Meizhou (584), was launched in July 2012 and deployed in the South China Sea Fleet in July 2013. Datong (580) was rolled out in August 2012 and entered service with the North China Sea Fleet in May 2013.

Project 20380 Steregushchy Class Corvettes, Russia
Project 20380 Steregushchy Class corvettes are the new multirole vessels being built by the JSC Severnaya Verf shipyard and Amur Shipbuilding Plant for the Russian Navy.

Shangrao (583) was launched in August 2012 and entered service with the East Sea Fleet in June 2013. Qinzhou (597) was launched in August 2012 and commissioned into the Hong Kong Garrison in July 2013.

Baise (585) was launched in October 2012 and entered service with the South China Sea Fleet in October 2013. Yingkou (581) was launched in November 2012 and deployed in the North China Sea Fleet in August 2013.

Ji'an (586) was rolled out in February 2013 and commissioned into the East China Sea Fleet in January 2014. The tenth frigate in the class, Jieyang (587), was launched in January 2013 and entered service with the South China Sea Fleet in January 2014.

Quanzhou (588) and Suqian (FFG 593) were launched in June 2013 and November 2013 respectively.

Design and features of Type 056 corvettes
The Type 056 corvette is the first Chinese modular warship that can be deployed as an offshore patrol vessel or a multi-role frigate. The vessel features stealthy hull design integrating sloped surface and compact superstructure.

The guided missile corvette has a length of 89m, beam of 11.6m and maximum draft of 4.4m. The full load displacement of the warship is 1,365t and crew capacity is 60.

The deck of the vessel can accommodate one rigid hull inflatable boat and four inflatable life-rafts packed in hard-shelled canisters. The helicopter deck at the stern can support a Harbin Z-9C light utility helicopter.

Type 056 Class sensors / radars
The Type 056 corvette incorporates a Type 360 air/surface search radar, Type 760 navigation radar, Type LR-66 fire control radar, Type 754 helicopter control and approach radar, and a hull mounted sonar.

The warship is also equipped with two jammers, decoy launchers, IR-17 optronics and a SITN240 SATCOM communication system.

Weapon systems fitted to the Chinese warship
The corvette is armed with four YJ-83 (C-803) sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missiles, an AJK-10 (HQ-10) surface-to-air missile launcher and two 324mm triple torpedo tubes. The AJK-10 launcher can fire up to eight missiles.

The corvette is equipped with an H/PJ-26 76mm main gun and is also fitted with two H/PJ-17 30mm dual mode remote controlled weapon systems, which can be operated automatically or manually.

Engine and performance
The Jiangdao class corvette is powered by two SEMT Pielstick PA6-STC marine engines driving two shafts. Each engine generates a power output of 5,148kW. The vessel can sail at a maximum speed of more than 30kt and has a range of over 2,000nm at 18kt speed.

It's half the size of the F22P so it's main purpose would be to patrol the coastal waters of the makran coastline. The PN has actually opted for FACs to perform this particular role and 8 Azmat class FACs are being inducted.

Sir, Azmat class is fine for littoral operations in Makran coast, but we need 1500 tonne class corvettes to patrol in the more important 'Kutch' area......the Sindh/Gujarat area

. .
It can't be deployed as a multirole frigate as mentioned at the description. @araz first of all what it the requirement and threat environment for Pakistan's OPV needs?

.
I think we should be thinking of fielding a platform which has an effective med. to long range range SAM capability. PN has been lacking in this after the withdrawal of the Brooks/Garcia program.

AShM capability is up to speed in all of thee present platforms. Type 21 has the Exocet/Harpoon, F-22 n Azmat class; the 802 missile.in the 120 KM to 200 KM range.

We need fleet air defense capability which we lack today.

Another area is ASW. Currently, we do not have a stand-off ASW capability in the face of ever more sophisticated submersible platforms being purchased by IN. AS Sensor suit is another area that needs to be addressed.

We need to mix and match Chinese platforms with sensor suit from the west -- we did this in the amazon upgrades over the years.

Turkey can become a key for us in doing this exercise.

.
Pakistan is making its Dehshat class missile carrying ships which are fast and agile however we need some Firepower in Navy and that can only come with Type 054A ships

At least four units

Or if we get OHP frigates 3 more ships at discounted rates that would be an option as well

Type-21s don't have AShM now only SAMS since 2014.

Larger F22Ps are said to be next 4 ships and they will have at least MR SAMS, 2 older Type-54s are also possible because they were agreed by two nations.

Reading through the Wiki article it seems that modifications which include enlarging the length of the deck to hold a helo have been carried out to individual country@s demands. I suspect range/endurance and speed would probably vary in accordance to the changes made.
