Wow, this is surprising. Alot of people already knew the Vietnamese economy is underperforming, but I didn't know it's this bad.

According to economists from USAID, Vietnam's GNI per capita should have passed over $7000 by now, but it is still only $1400.

Vietnam’s per capita income should have crossed $7,000: USAID economist | Business | Thanh Nien Daily

Weak management and red tape prevented Vietnam's per capita income from hitting US$7,500, according to a USAID economist.

Olin McGill, a senior economist for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), said that though the World Bank ranks Vietnam's economy 99th out of 189 economies in terms of business environment, the country has a gross national income (GNI) of just $1,400 per capita.
....
Vietnam's progress has been dragged down by some bad-performance indicators, the economist said.......the country’s growth remains moderate and well-below its potential, the World Bank said earlier this month.

under $1000 means a country is third world poverty.
between $1000 - $4000 means a country is lower middle income.
$4000 - $13000 means upper middle income.
over $13000 = high income/developed country.

A lower middle income country needs a GDP growth rate of over 6% to reach upper middle income status in reasonable time. It needs over 7% growth rate to break through the middle income trap and reach developed status.

Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia still stuck in middle income trap. Singapore broke through middle income trap and become developed. PRC is on the right track (7.5% growth this year).

Vietnam is on the lower end of the lower middle income bracket. Their GDP growth last year was under 5% and this year predicted to be just slightly over 5%. Their leaders goal was to make VN a developed country by 2020.

FAIL.

No , edison ...
they are true, Vietnam is very poor, even poorer than Laos.

.
VN is underrated. VN should at least have a $100,000 GDP per capital.

They will surpass Luxembourg next year.

lol that's according to NiceGuy's calculation.

The USAID economists say that VN should have surpassed Philippines and Thailand by now, they had the potential. But their leaders suck, so thats why their GNI is still only $1400 now.

. .
IMO, North Vietnam screwed up. France developed Vietnam's economy relatively well during the colonial period. Vietnam had advance ship building, heavy industry, railroads, ect.

During the Vietnam war, South Vietnam's economy was one of the best in Asia, the US marines stationed in Saigon said the cities there looks just as advanced as a US city. South Vietnam's navy was also one of the largest and best equipped in the world at that time. It is a complete mystery how South Vietnam lost the battle of the parcel islands to 4 old rusty PLA fast attack crafts.

Seriously no joke, I think VN is better than the Philippines. But their economy is still dependent on China, which is the largest importer of Vietnam's product, like the rice, shrimp and clothes. Vietnam import the most value-added product, but export raw materials, this can't be changed in short period.

But lots of the Vietnamese leaders today controlling their country are south Vietnameses, like their PM Tan Dung. And North Vietnam during the early years in the 60s are less corrupted than South Vietnam. This is a well known fact. If anything, the south vietnamese US puppets are the ones that destroyed their country.

But the USAID economists is not talking about that period. He is saying that during the period 80s until now, Vietnam GNI should have surpassed $7000.

Yea VN is going the same direction of Philippines. Philippines was more rich in the 60s (richer than south korea) and had lots of potential to become an economic tiger. But their leaders also suck and they went down.

Mystery? No, it's not mystery. The answer is quite obvious. It was due to the bravery and dedication of our soldiers.
Have you ever heard grenade sea battle? That was invented by our soldiers in Xisha(parcel islands).

Cool picture. Not sure if that is what happen though. Throwing grenade by hand is too inaccurate and requires the naval fleet to be at most 20-30 meters away. These type of naval engagements (no missiles, ww2 era ship desgins) are usually fought 1000-4000 meters away.

The Chinese side claim they used rocket propel launchers to make up for their ships inferior weapon system.

The S.Vietnam's ships were much bigger and heavier than ours. They got them from USA navy. So our fleet used a tactic to close S.Vietnam's ships as much as possible. Because you know big cannons can not work in short range. It's a very smart tactic. When the distance is short enough, the grenade became a good weapon. It did happen.
