USAF exercise eyes China as adversary

CHIMICHANGA:A nation-wide bombing exercise involving aircraft based in Japan highlighted the US Air Force’s ability to operate in a large anti-access target area

By J. Michael Cole / Staff Reporter

A long-range strike exercise held by the US Strategic Command earlier this month may have been intended as a practice run for a future contingency involving China, military analysts have said.
The exercise, codenamed Operation Chimichanga, was held at the US military’s Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex near Eilson Air Force Base, Alaska, and involved a variety of combat aircraft and bombers, including F-22 Raptor stealth fighters, B-1 bombers, E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS) and KC-135 Stratotankers air-refueling aircraft.

US Air Force F-16s from Misawa Air Base in northern Japan also took part in the exercise.
Other than a short press release detailing the type of aircraft and weapons used during the exercise, the US Air Force has remained relatively low-key on the matter and did not refer to any specific contingency or scenario.

Major Scott Lanis, 168th Operations Group chief of scheduling, said the more than 168,000km2 of airspace at the complex provided a diverse training environment that allowed pilots to train realistically and jointly in situations similar to those they would face in combat.

The exercise allowed different aircraft to work together in a simulated strike environment, to practice interoperability while simultaneously traveling long distances and receiving air-refueling support, a notice on the exercise said.

This was also the first time that increment 3.1, a recent F-22 hardware and software upgrade that provides the F-22 with the means to find and engage ground targets, was used in a large force employment exercise.

The exercise on April 4 involved launches of a combination of real and computer-simulated weapons at mock targets scattered across the Joint Pacific Alaska Range.

Although the nation-wide joint exercise was officially aimed at validating the long-range capabilities of the B-1s and the ability of F-22s and F-16s to escort them into an anti-access target area, military analysts have speculated that it was also aimed at validating evolving US Air Force tactics and concepts for military operations against either China in the Pacific theater of operations, or possibly North Korea.

One of the main focuses of Chinese military modernization in recent years has been anti-access/area-denial capabilities to delay or prevent US forces from intervening in an armed conflict over Taiwan.

In addition to the Dong Feng-21D anti-ship missile currently under development, China has erected an impressive network of surface-to-air missiles to counter enemy aircraft, mostly through acquisitions from Russia.

‘Operation Chimichanga’ Tests Pentagon’s Stealth Strike Force

While the Alaska test apparently proved that the stealthy strike team can defeat determined enemy forces at long range, it also underscored America’s vulnerability against the fast-growing Chinese military. It takes the latest stealth fighters and upgraded bombers flying as a team to beat China, and thanks to developmental problems America has only so many of those airplanes to work with.

This is nothing new but an update on how to attack vital mainland Chinese targets. When I was on the F-111 back in the 1980s, we already had navigation plans made out specifically for vital targets in theaters of interests...

Mission parameters are uploaded into the computers via a Smiths 3200 series Data Transfer System (DTS). This allows mission profiles to be prepared on a ground based Horizon Technologies Mission Planning System (running on a PC) and then uploaded prior to takeoff using a 256kByte capacity NVRAM cartridge. The DTS is a very useful facility, as it saves the Navigator much time otherwise spent punching in waypoints on a cockpit keypad. The RAAF's experience with the test aircraft indicates much shorter pretakeoff times on the taxiways as a result.
As new technologies are available, sometimes these mission plans got dusty and woefully out of date. Underestimate US at your peril, navigation routes from anywhere in the world to all the major Chinese military installations are ALREADY planned.

oh, we never underestimate you. we know exactly what you are.

Inside sources tell me that China has a plan if we do attack Iran.

China better not attempt anything stupid as we will defend all our Allies.

About as peaceful as your peaceful exercises with Russia, spare us your outrage. We'll drop thousands of bombs and missiles and what have you on China, and we'll do just fine. No first use promise not withstanding, China won't commit suicide from a bit of widespread destruction, it would require something more permanent.

We already tangoed with Russia, and we have threatened and in turn weathered the threat of nuclear fire, your threats are less than impressive in comparison.

LOL China already humiliated USA in the Korean War. We even captured Seoul and brutally occupied the population.

Who cares if USA wants to practice a "bombing run"? That is their own prerogative. China practices JL-2A launches all the time. We'll wipe out USA bases in Asia-Pacific first, and then escalate on to New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles and so on as needed.

Our strategy is to use the SRBM/MRBM/IRBM to wipe out all the US military bases around us, then we can safely use our ICBM/SLBM against the US soil.

It seems that only few people here can get it. :coffee:

. . .
Who care? US already knows it, while their fanboys and cheerleaders don't. :coffee:

The first step to disrupting or countering a plan is to know it.

If we know where China will attack then your plan is already in great danger.

Does China know where we will attack?
