USA Will Provide 1,026 M113A2 APC For New Iraq Army

Maybe Iraq preparing the armed forces incase KRG want independence?
KRG doesnt have an air force so it would be a ground war.

From Iraqis on forums I hear that they mostly want and think best is if KRG declares independence with their official borders cause they cost us 19-23% of the GDP.

Maliki from time to time insists that Iraq has the right to has its forces anywhere in Iraq, in KRG region aswell.SLC MP calls Maliki to form operations command for northern Iraq in Erbil

I think they arm for many reasons, especially keeping Kurds from annexing more lands, currently Peshmerga controls some lands outside KRG boundaries which Baghdad does not agree with, if theyd go independent they would have to leave those lands to prevent confrontation, which they will not ofcourse.. only when will they go independent ?? these guys will never go independent considering staying part of Iraq they more benefits.

For a detailed analysis of KRG vs Iraq by a US military veteran that holds a blog :

In the long run Iraq will gain larger military superiority over KRG.

And what about the sunni/shia devide?
Does the central government want a devide by those two?

Sunni/Shia divide is not really taking place, these are just words by politicans and regional tensions.
In Iraq sunni/shia never wanted to divide, all they demand is better services and security.

M113 - Opfor Vismod training vehicle. http://www.military.com/NewContent/0,13190,Galloway_012704,00.html

L159 problems are due to fierce competition with the Korean T50.

Here is the info:

Iraq Requests M113 APCs

On Sept 15/10, the US DSCA announced [PDF] Iraq’s formal request to buy 440 refurbished M113A2 tracked Armored Personnel Carriers, which would be transferred from American stocks as Excess Defense Articles. The total contract value could be up to $131 million, and would also include 440 M2 .50 caliber machine guns mounted up top, 607 AN/VRC-90E Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radios Systems (SINCGARS), plus M259 Smoke Grenade Launchers, Combat Vehicle Crewmember Helmets, publications and technical documentation, tools and test equipment, spare and repair parts, support equipment, site survey, construction, personnel training and training equipment, and U.S. Government and contractor support.

The prime contractor will be BAE Corporation in Rosslyn, VA, and implementation of this proposed sale will require the assignment of multiple additional U.S. Government and contractor representatives to Iraq for a period of 2 years, with an option for additional years.

So, that's under $300,000 per vehicle. However,

The unit cost of a new-built M113A3 is approximately $300 000, while a conversion from A2 to A3 costs $160 000. New-built models are no longer available, though M113A3's production facilities are still open for production, and conversions of pre-A3 models are still offered by the current manufacturer.

So, these were done over very well.

New built takes time, they want quick delivery.
Besides I know they sell Iraq overpriced hardware + there is corruption.

As posted: New-built models are no longer available, but M113A3's production facilities are still open for production and conversions of pre-A3 models are still offered by the current manufacturer. The original post mentioned refurbished vehicles. The unit cost for this deal included other things besides the vehicle.

In short: there is no way to determine 'over priced' from the available data.

Lots of other options to fill that in.
Iraq needs military rations, radars, manpads + ATGW, not including all the heavy weaponry that still has to be acquired.
Id like to see something like TOW in our equipment.
