And I am apalled by yours, Canada wasn't attacked by thos eclaiming islam and didn't lsoe 3000 of it's citizens in histories worst ever terrorist attack. Refusing to accpet American sensabilites and swecuity issues on thier own planes regarding the prevention of future attacks is very ignorant.

Who cares that those people were claiming, Islamic world have rejected them; The terrorist attacks were not because of the Islam, they were the fruits of the double standard middle-east policy.

Yes it was racial profiling. Were they carrying a big placard that said, "We are praying - Don't disturb". Westerners are not familiar with Islamic customs. There's not much one can do about that.

There was another incident that was pretty publicised in India. A group of Indians were passing cellphones, talking changing places just before take off in Netherlands. They were all taken into custody. There was a lot of hooha about racism in India but facts remains that they were behaving suspiciously and today airlines cannot afford to take risks.

One thing is certain.Americans have become downright paranoid after 9/11.
This incident was regrettable but the thing is unless the average american is better informed I dont see how they are going to stop such incidents.
Before 9/11 what did Ordinary americans know about religious fundamentalism, Taliban and Al qaeda?? Then they suddenly lost 3000 countrymen and the next thing they saw all over TV were bearded,turbaned men calling for Holy War against the US. So now they seem to be scared of muslims in general and bearded ones in particular.There were even attacks on Sikhs in the aftermath of 9/11 with ppl mistaking them for OBL followers.
They have to get rid of this ignorance.

British Muslim MP grilled at US airport

WASHINGTON: Shahid Malik, a British Labour member of Parliament, on arrival in the United States recently for a speaking engagement was held for questioning by immigration for nearly an hour. He was carrying a British diplomatic passport.

When asked, at a panel discussion on the increasing profiling of Muslims, why Malik was detained and interrogated for one hour before being let through, Martin Ficke, the special agent in charge of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New York, replied, “I’ve already talked to him (Malik) about it privately and apologised. It shouldn’t have happened.” The British MP, a British-Pakistani sat on the panel where this question was asked. The subject of discussion was ‘War on Terror and the Clash of Civilisations.’

A report in the Christian Science Monitor on Monday said the answer was obvious to the audience that included a large number of Muslim-American students. Because his name was Shahid Malik. The report claims that across the country in conference rooms as well as local cafes and community meeting halls, officials of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FBI are “reaching out” to Muslim-Americans in an attempt to “bridge the huge gap of mistrust” that developed on both sides after 9/11.

More than 1,200 immigrants, mostly Arab and Muslim males, were detained and denied due process for months after the attacks. The Justice Department’s inspector general concluded that their detentions were “indiscriminate and haphazard,” with no clear distinction made between those held for immigration violations and those who were suspected terrorists. The report also found “a pattern of physical and verbal abuse” by correction officers. Ultimately, only a handful of those detained were charged with a terrorism-related offence, but 231 were deported.

Male visitors from 24 Arab and Muslim countries were required to register with local immigration offices after arrival in the United States. As many as 13,000 were found “out of status” and are awaiting deportation hearings. Many of the visa problems were caused by inaccurate data and long delays in processing applications for permanent status. The Justice Department eventually cancelled the programme, according to the Monitor report.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, discrimination against Muslim- and Arab-Americans also soared. In 2001, the FBI reported a 1,600 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes and an almost 500 percent increase in ethnic-based hate crimes against people of Arab descent.

The Monitor report says the FBI has found many misperceptions about Islam among its agents. At the FBI Academy and in ongoing field training, agents are now taught about Islam and its basic tenets. According to the newspaper, “Although the outreach and educational efforts have had some success in New York, they are inconsistent nationally: Quality is dependent on the priority that local federal offices give to such outreach.”
