Hi All,

i just curious about the defence treaty in between the USA and Japan. Is the US obliged to help to go to any ..i mean to any extent in case of any attack on Japan. Here is the security treaty.

http://www.mofa.go.jp/region/n-america/us/q&a/ref/1.html

Going by the Article V of treaty
"Each Party recognizes that an armed attack against either Party in the territories under the administration of Japan would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declares that it would act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional provisions and processes. Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall be immediately reported to the Security Council of the United Nations in accordance with the provisions of Article 51 of the Charter. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security."

What could be the interpretation of this Article. does it mean USA will retaliate with nuke attack in case of nuke attack on Japan.

US reserves the right of N attack, in case any ally under such treaty is attacked. However it usually translates into a massive conventional attack amounting to virtual annihilation.
