The Pentagon purchased two Russian-made Su-27 fighter jets from Ukraine. The United States will reportedly use the Russian jets to train effective counter-operation efforts.

The Russian jets are a serious competition for the US F-15 fighters. The jets of Russia’s renowned Sukhoi design bureau proved to be more successful than their US competitors during a number of tests. The Pentagon has been trying to obtain the Russian warplanes, and Ukraine helped the nation do it legally.

The news about the deal between the USA and the Air Force of Ukraine appeared on the US-based website Strategypage.com. The website said that Russia’s Su-27 fighters were technically similar to F-15 jets, although the Russian planes were 30 percent cheaper.

Several Su-27 jets landed at Langley US air base in the summer of 1992, upon the agreement with the US side. Russian pilots examined F-15 jets at the base and proposed a simulated combat. The US pilots did not like the idea much: they thought that it would be too risky to hold the fight above the base in front of photographers and TV cameras. They eventually accepted the offer, but agreed to hold the mock fight above the Atlantic Ocean, 200 kilometers far from the coast.

The scheme of the mock fight was very simple. A Sukhoi was supposed to fly behind a US jet, and the planes were supposed to switch places with one another.

A US plane attempted to fly away from the Russian jet, but the Russian pilot caught up with the F-15 very easily. The planes switched places, and the Su-27 flew away from the F-15 making a turn and gaining altitude. The Russian jet found itself behind the American fighter a couple of minutes later. The F-125 pilot lost the Russian aircraft out of sight and could not escape from it afterwards: the Russian pilot was keeping the F-15 covered.

The F-15 lost another battle with Russia’s Su-27 in the autumn of 2000, during the US-Japanese drills in the Pacific Ocean. Two Su-27 jets, covering the Su-24MP, conducted a sudden attack of the flagship of the US 7th fleet, Kitty Hawk. The US aircraft carrier would have been destroyed in real combat conditions.

The US Defense Department is seriously concerned about the growing sales of Su-27 and Su-30 all over the world. Russia has been shipping these jets to India, China, Malaysia, Venezuela, Indonesia and Algeria for years.

Now the US purchased two Su-27 fighter jets from Ukraine. The US military command will now be able to study the phenomenon of Russia’s Sukhoi design bureau thoroughly.

LOl Funny Tile..The F15 combat record is just too good.I think the only aircraft that will break it will be F22...F15 have shot down 104 enemy air crafts without any losses..104-0 Losses..You consider that bad?F15 is one of the best air supermacy fighter...

I do not deny that F-15 is one of the best air dominance aircraft , however these sukhoi jets are untested , and yes the title of the article and most of content is sheer propaganda , just wanted to have a healthy discussion in regards to one on one combat ( and we are not considering the f-15E with AESA).

The Russian Aircraft is always more preferred than the Americans... The Worldwide users of the Russian planes is way too higher as compared to the American planes....

Yawn!!!

Prove them wrong....!

A SU 27 has a higher ceiling limit than a F 15.

End of case

And higher ceiling wins?

I really do not have to prove anything to any one since there is nothing specific in the article about the RoEs laid down for the supposed exercises (and I am even wondering about the veracity of these exercises given this rather poorly written article is coming from Stratfor).

Those who cannot afford American or get clearance go for the Russian hardware and then try to upgrade them with Western avionics.

The simple fact is that even on the basics of maintainability, the Su-27 cannot hold a candle to what the F-15 offers. The engine, avionics and armaments all have better MTBO/MTBF. The avionics on the F-15 ensure that it can stay current with anything the Russians put out and more.

Had the F-15 been equipped with the JHMCS and AIM-9X, none of the scenarios being discussed would really matter.

For what reasons? Care to give that a thought?

That's because Russians sold to anyone but USA chose its customers wisely.

What about copy rights in US?
I think it is not possible to do any tempering with SU-27 in side US borders because of strict laws of land. How ever this can be transfered to Gitmo where it can be copied with out any legal complications.

The Saturn V rocket has a very high ceiling limit than a SU 27.

but extremely bad for combat.

Your point please ?

What a piece of desperate propaganda garbage...

First...When the Soviet Union collapsed, former Soviet satellites needed money. Second...The Russians could not go and collect whatever weapons in the former satellites' possession. So the US DoD got plenty of solicitations for top of the line Soviet arms, everything from fighter aircrafts to infantry rifles to missile control stations. I myself have handled Soviet avionics and am not impressed. Even a drunken FAA inspector would not pass those crap.

I am here in Las Vegas where Nellis AFB put on Cold War trophies display of Soviet era weaponry. It is called the Threat Training Facility. Not only that, the Russians are so desperate for cash that they are giving out tourist flights on the Sucky-27...

Top Gun SU-27 fighter jet - NOW! Fly on legendary SU-27 Fighter Jets simulator in

An American civilian company ALREADY owns a few -27s. Company name is Tac Air out of Reno. We probably bought the latest variants since the last batch we disassembled to study the aircraft in more details.

Finally...Looks like the website got an F-14 image over the water and labeled it SU-27. The Russians and the Chinese never ceases to amuse those of us who have relevant experience. The Russians are the most hilarious.

That is because of cost. Russian aircraft are generally about 30% less cost. Russians don't have union workers extremely high wages. if you look at actual air combat records MIG's have a very poor record. The Korean war was the last time the Russians had a superior aircraft. And the Americans quickly adapted and came out with better. The F-15 has shot down dozens of MIG's in combat with 0 losses. It is also a 3rd generation aircraft and quickly in the process of being replaced with the F-22 and F-35. In fact Langley Air Force base mentioned in the thread has mainly F-22's now.
