US warns China that Washington will not remain passive if the international order is threatened

.
BS thread, US is dead duck now. They words come out from peanuts, they do nothing to china or russia. Talk without action.

I can understand them backing down from their promise to Ukraine against Russia, or backing down from their mutual defense treaty to the Philippines against China. They don't want to get into a fight with such powers, that is understandable.

Even the USA backing off from North Korean attacks against South Korea is somewhat understandable, since NK borders both Russia and China.

What is shocking is how they drew a "red line" over Syria, and despite the red line being crossed multiple times, they didn't do anything.

When a superpower draws a red line over a small country like Syria, it is ridiculous to think they would not be able to follow through.

America is the established power trying to hold on to their global hegemony. We are merely trying to become a developed country.

Every year they wait, our economy will add another trillion. We multiplied our economy by six times in the past decade alone.

They could have upheld their mutual defense treaty with the Philippines, and tried to stop us taking the Scarborough shoal in 2012.

They could have upheld their 1994 promise to protect the Ukraine from Russia. Or their red lines on Syria.

But they didn't.

Nothing can stop our economic expansion now. All we need is to keep playing for more time, and that is exactly what we are getting.

The US is remaining passive on all counts. They've already decided to give up on Ukraine, and they don't mention Scarborough shoal anymore.

congrats on being a regional power that still has over a billion people mouths to feed and even with being 2nd highest GDP is not developed like others lower than them . every war you fought you lost or ran away in a few days from it...we know why you would never attack Taiwan or have the balls to take over HK

we also understand why chinese on't know the difference between protecting a country vs an oil block

Ukraine that used to be part of USSR is going to be pro europe now... Myanmar that used to be solidly pro china is now pro US...

at least our red lines are over humanitarian reasons-- while you chinese continue to support the world's who's who of genocidal dictators.. China never met a genocidal dictator it did not see as a friend

hell you preach about protection you can't even claim taiwan and hong king you call as part of china under your rule

China General just said U.S. is having an ED problem.

The United States has warned China to stop using "destabilising" tactics in its bid to claim parts of the South China Sea.

US defence secretary Chuck Hagel made the comments at an Asia-Pacific security forum in Singapore, also attended by Australia's Defence Minister, David Johnston.

China is locked in territorial disputes with Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia over stretches of the resource rich region.

This month, ships from China and Vietnam clashed near the Paracel Islands and Vietnam said a Chinese ship sunk one of its boats by ramming it.

"In recent months, China has undertaken destabilising, unilateral actions asserting its claims in the South China Sea," Mr Hagel said in the speech to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

He said the US had no position on the merits of the rival claims over the region, which is rich in oil and gas.

But he went on to say that aggression would not be ignored.

"We firmly oppose any nation's use of intimidation, coercion, or the threat of force to assert these claims," he said.

Candid comments surprise Chinese officials
The unusually direct comments from the US have surprised Chinese officials in Singapore.

Chuck Hagel later had a bi-lateral meeting with the deputy chief of staff of the Chinese Army, Lieutenant-General Wang Guanzhong.

"You were very candid this morning, and to be frank, more than our expectations," Wang said at the start of the meeting.

"Although, I do think those criticisms are groundless, I do appreciate your candour," he said.

In Beijing, China's state media is reporting that president Xi Jinping has also responded to the recent criticisms to his nation's action in the South China Sea by saying China would not initiate aggressive action.

"We will never stir up trouble," he is reported to have said.

"But we will react in the necessary way to the provocations of countries involved."

The US is not the only nation at the summit concerned by the recent conflict.

At the forum, Australia also said any use of force or coercion to change the status quo in the South China Sea will not be accepted.

"Australia does not take a position on competing claims in the South China Sea," the Defence Minister, Mr Johnston, said.

"But we have a legitimate interest in the maintenance of peace and stability, respect for international law, unimpeded trade and freedom of navigation.

"The use of force or coercion to unilaterally alter the status quo in the East China Sea and the South China Sea is simply not acceptable."
