US-Vietnam discuss Nuclear deal - China concerned

Who else - China. Read the title. China is unnecessarily concerned about this nuclear deal when it itself have perpetrated massive nuclear proliferation to Pakistan.

What's wrong with giving domestic nuclear energy to Pakistan?

They already have nuclear weapons... if they wanted to proliferate those weapons then they can do that ALREADY. Supplying them with domestic power deals doesn't change that.

If Pakistan has a steady source of energy they will be more stable... surely that is a good thing for India too?

There is nothing wrong in giving nuclear energy to Pakistan but is being done by violating the rules that China has ascribed to. China, being a member of NSG cannot supply nuclear fuel to Pakistan as it is not a NPT member. If China wants to supply nuclear fuel to Pakistan, it needs to obtain a waiver for Pakistan just like India obtained a waiver from NSG as part of US-India nuke deal.

I see what you mean.

However the NSG is "non-binding". It was designed to give guidelines instead of rules.

There is no legal obligation to follow the guidelines set out by the NSG.

Anyway like I said, if Pakistan has a steady supply of domestic energy, Pakistan will become more stable. Surely that is a good thing for everyone?

Sorry you still don't seem to understand, by spreading the news of a nuclear deterrence, which can only mean a WMD of its own, Taiwan will force a Chinese invasion, as Chinese law REQUIRES such.

Why would Taiwan need a nuclear deterrence? I don't think any Taiwanese seriously think China will launch a nuclear attack on the island, just as most South Koreans ain't bothered by the North's nuclear program.

Thanks for your post.

I would like to share very good read about Taiwan's nuclear program as another Chinese friend has mentioned about the Taiwan nuclear program predates ~1960.

Taiwan has requisite resources, expertise and highly skilled work force. Taiwan was hell bent to develop nuclear weapons not once but twice. She initiated its program to counter only china, especially after first test by China. China do not have any leverage to hamper the determination of Taiwan, who was once at the verge of developing nukes. China should thank USA for her restless efforts to force the roll back of Taiwan nuclear weapon program.

I hate to say but you are living in denial without admitting the harsh truths of previous Taiwanese perceptions about main land China. However i honestly admit that my knowledge about present Taiwan is limited. But as long as Taiwan maintain it self as an Independent nation or both have conflict of Interests about legitimacy over each other i will stick with previous perceptions. May be Taiwan is bluffing the International community and has already assimilated to china in a fear of stupid sounding Chinese law which will allow China to invade Taiwan without suffering attrition from Taiwan.

Today the situation is not better then before as far as growing military strength of China is concerned (as you mentioned yourself) for Taiwan. The situation will rapidly change if USA refused to provide whatever (wont go in detail, please read the PDF article) guarantee it has been pledging to Taiwan till today. Also with news of nuclear deal with Vietnam one can assume that USA is trying escape from his security guard duties of yellow sea by enabling nations like Vietnam to become self reliance and self protecting against suspicious Chinese military might. Why Taiwan will be an exception for USA not to help (underscore recent weapon deals) for its legitimate chronic nuclear aspiration specially when they do have such expertise to develop.

Please read following in detail.

The USA already said they would NOT help Taiwan if they unilaterally declare independence.

However we have to remember that the Taiwanese are our brothers and sisters.

We should avoid war at all costs, because if there is war then it will be Chinese people who suffer, regardless they live in the PRC or in Taiwan.

Luckily the vast majority of Taiwanese support the "status quo". One day in the future China will be fully developed and will have democracy, I hope there will be a reunification then.

I think it's important to avoid a war between China and Taiwan at all costs, even if it means letting them go. No more civil war.... no more brothers killing brothers.

An excerpt from an article reads "In recent months Beijing has elevated its claims to territory in the South China Sea to the level of a "core national interest" on par with Tibet or Taiwan, and that has sparked considerable anger................."

The timing of this announcement is debate-able; however; the signing of the agreement between VIET NAM & US is more than a decade old.

Food for thought:-

1. Who is next in line to sign?
2. Let's Encircle the dragon ?
3. Economy is bad. Lets make money by selling something people would need?

Vietnam has dispute with Thailand, Brunie, Cambodia, Malaysia?....show us the evident!!! considering Vietnam only share borders with Laos and Cambodia.

Is this place blanket by Chinese commies? Every East Asian nation is begging and rather be an America's biotch than be a friend with China...what does this tell you?

Nobody likes or trust China, not even the North Koreans.

Vietnam and Japan needs to start packing some heat, because the way China is walking around the South China sea these days, Vietnam, Japan and others need some nukes to keep the cocky Chinese at bay.

Vietnam has maritime dispute with Malaysia and Thailand over Gulf of Thailand. It has dispute with Malaysia, Philippines and Brunei over Spratly Islands.

It's simple diplomatic principle that you don't want to be dominated by your big neighbor. That's why South Asian countries wants to be friends with China to counterbalance India, or South American countries want to be friends with China and India to counterbalance the U.S.

As for 'rather be an America's biotch than be a friend with China', name me one country in East Asia or Southeast Asia that doesn't want to be a friend with China?

And please do tell me what China is doing in South China Sea these days to make Asian countries wanting nukes? Protesting against U.S spy ships?

For your information, the Philippines, a long time U.S ally and a claimant of South China Sea just asked U.S to get out of the dispute.
AFP: Manila says US not needed in South China Sea row

How does this fit into your idea of everyone wants to be U.S's *****?

Who else - China. Read the title. China is unnecessarily concerned about this nuclear deal when it itself have perpetrated massive nuclear proliferation to Pakistan.

The title article is another piece of irresponsible journalism in which the writer does a few interviews with academics and decides those two or three scholars represents Chinese government.

For your information, here's Chinese foreign ministry's response to the reported U.S-Vietnam nuclear deal

A: China is not aware of the specifics. We always believe that countries have the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and relevant international cooperation. At the same time, countries should earnestly honor their respective obligation of non-proliferation.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on US-Vietnam Nuclear Cooperation

But of course you'll not read such statement in mainstream Western media, because it doesn't fit their grand narrative for China. So everything goes as usual and official statement will continue to be ignored in favor of hawkish remarks from some think-tank academics.

The previous two Taiwanese attempts were under KMT leaders who fought a civil war with the Communists and still harbor the dream of re-taking the mainland (BTW, their ashes are still waiting to be moved to a final resting place on the mainland after a future reunification).

I do not think the current Taiwanese administration is concerned with Chinese nukes because none of their stimulation of Chinese invasions feature scenarios of Chinese nukes being used and I have yet to read an article on future conflict seriously consider the prospective of a Chinese nuclear strike.

All those are with good reasons too. The communist party wants reunification mostly to boost their legitimacy at home and a nuclear strike will evaporate any legitimacy they so dearly crave.

To summarize the Taiwan's situation:
1) It does not seriously concern about use of nuclear weapon by the mainland.
2) It knows it can hardly hope to develop a nuclear weapon without being detected by China, at this age of satellite photos and cross-strait exchange.
3) It knows the Chinese government is compelled by law to launch an invasion if an Taiwanese attempt to produce WMD is detected.
4) If, as we assumed, its relationship with the U.S has deteriorated to the degree it no longer enjoys American nuclear umbrella or the U.S would refuse any weapon deal with it, it can't hope the U.S to come to its aid during an attack, especially if Taiwan itself has provoked the attack by developing WMD.

So why would Taiwan want to commit suicide by developing a nuke?

There is nothing wrong in giving nuclear energy to Pakistan but is being done by violating the rules that China has ascribed to. China, being a member of NSG cannot supply nuclear fuel to Pakistan as it is not a NPT member. If China wants to supply nuclear fuel to Pakistan, it needs to obtain a waiver for Pakistan just like India obtained a waiver from NSG as part of US-India nuke deal.

But it's okay for the US to supply nuclear fuel to India I suppose !

NPT has nothing to do with the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Civilian nuclear power plant is not subject to such treaty. So what rules did China violate to by helping Pakistan setup a nuclear power plant?
