Vietnam has a habit of antagonizing great powers, that's why they were invaded/killed on a regular basis. They also invade others when they are not getting invaded themselves. just not a very peace loving kind they are.

Vietnam was ally of USSR. And as such we enjoyed a nuclear umbrella.
Deng was even too afraid of Vietnam air defense and Vietnam vast numerous fighter jets that he forbade the PLA to deploy the airforce.
