Look at Russia's ties with Indonesia, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Like Pakistan they were on opposite side of the cold war versus Soviet Union. They have much improved relationships with Russia. Despite being on opposite sides on Syria Russia sold the turks S-400. Even after Turks shot down Russian aircraft.

You can name all the high level visits you want. Putin has not shown up in Pakistan. He has made 70 trips in the last 5 years including 3 to India. For all the talk of defense co-operation Pakistan has bought 4 Mi-35 attack choppers for $150 million.

Russia's relationship with Pakistan can improve. In the short run it will be dwarfed by their ties with India.

And, some staffs are becoming so obvious there's no way to deny them. Recent example being the India-China standoff. IMO, President Trump's speech was partly to reassure that India isn't alone against China. Her western borders are under the USA's watch!!!! Its not about the size of market to russia, its about India abandoning them and getting closer to USA.

One thing the world knows about Russia is they take revenge, and Delhi letting them down to get in bed will USA warrants that. Whilst URI was happening russian special forces were carrying out exercises in Gilgit Balistan thats enough of a message for New Delhi if you ask me. Russians dont do much talking their actions speak louder then words.

Add to that the dressing down the Russian FM gave India and Afghanistan at the Heart of Asia summit last year in Amritsar was another slap on you guys faces. Russia and India relationship has nose dived you've got to be a fool not to admit it.

Russian's always wanted to have direct access to warm waters.

After Independence, if Pakistan had become a Soviet ally keeping in view the geo-strategic nature of this partnership, the world would have been different.

Gwadar would have linked up north with USSR by road/rail and given access to them to warm waters for trade and commerce. There presence here would have neutralized US hegemony in the Indian Ocean as well.

The Afghan War would not have taken place and the chaos in Afghanistan would have been avoided.

India became a Soviet ally after we chose to side with the Americans, but there was no possibility of any land link through India, hence the Soviets never pursued it.

Russian cooperation with Pakistan needs to be sped up now with China being a strategic ally of both. India has openly become a US ally, which naturally places us in a position, where we should have been from the start.
