CNN is reporting that the US is planning to send Patriot missile batteries and F-16 fighter jets to Jordan as part of exercise, but with the understanding that the Patriot missiles may stay there after the exercise.
The deployment of these weapons have been approved by Hagel, and are intent to boost Jordan's security in the context of the Syrian Civil War, which has affected most of Syria's neighbors. According to the report, there is growing concern of Syrian missiles reaching Hezbollah, potentially striking targets in the wider region.
"In order to enhance the defensive posture and capacity of Jordan, some of these assets may remain beyond the exercise at the request of the government of Jordan," Lt Col T.G. Taylor, a spokesman at the U.S. Central Command, told CNN.
This month both the US and Jordan are taking part in a multinational training exercise called Eager Lion.
