KOCHI: US will invest $1 trillion towards infrastructure development in India to meet the needs of a growing population, said Nirupama Rao, India's ambassador to the US. She was addressing members of the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( in Kochi on Thursday.

"By March 2012, a trade delegation led by US secretary of commerce John E Bryson will visit India to discuss this investment. An 'evergreen revolution' similar to the Green Revolution is planned with US expertise to increase agricultural production and rural income. Space technology will come in handy for predicting monsoon and creating new linkages from farm to market," she revealed.

"The political engagement between India and the US has strengthened significantly and the strategic understanding has deepened. The partnership is multi-faceted and it extends to all activities that touch all aspects of the human endeavour -- from education, health, agriculture to our concerns in peace, security and human dignity. A strategic dialogue was established between the two countries in 2009 and has identified five principal areas for co-operation," she said.

"The two countries are also working together to have a stable economy in Africa and Afghanistan. A global disease detachment centre is planned as part of health cooperation. We will also focus on women's empowerment and combating maritime piracy. Indo-Pacific maritime trade cooperation will be beneficial for both the countries."

Rao also suggested that Kerala, a natural tourist destination, should be promoted more aggressively in the US.

Deepak L Aswani, chairman of KCCI, Jasmin Karim, convenor of KCCI Ladies' Forum, Sheela Kochouseph, joint convenor, KCCI Ladies's Forum, and Savio Mathew, secretary of KCCI, were also present.

Its not the US govt per se. What is meant here is that US companies will invest in India for inroads into the Indian market and probably some profits. American companies have a lot of money and they are not willing to invest in this uncertain period.

I don't think they will just invest the whole money at one time. Also US investment will be coming from private companies not the government. Why would US government invest in infrastructure projects ? Yes they might invest some in money various bonds like infrastructure bonds.

I think US companies need a market especially for their banks, investment firms, power (thermal, nuclear, hydro-electric and renewable power sources) and basic infrastructure like highways, railways, airports and ports etc. And if India is able to sell the idea correctly i don't see why US government and US companies will invest 1 trillion $ in India.

I think we should also go to Gulf nations with some big planning as they have alot of money and they need new avenues for investments and india is the best choice along-with of-course China.

Good joke. They hardly have money to invest in the old infrastructure of the USA, let alone any other country.

Last time i knew, China was investing in their infrastructure....by building bridge components and high speed rail proposals for California.

Just to make it clear

Finance investment is putting money into something with the expectation of gain

Its not aid! It is decided upon thorough analysis, confirming high degree of security for the principal amount, as well as security of return, within an expected period of time

On the other hand,

In international relations, aid (also known as international aid, overseas aid, or foreign aid) is a voluntary transfer of resources from one country to another, given at least partly with the objective of benefiting the recipient country

Do you see the difference now?

Have you ever been to the USA or seen their infrastructure? Old in comparison to who, your country?

As long as they are not called WalMart, eh? ;)

Many in India still regard socialism as panacea for all our problems. Plus some parties like BJP have gone morally bankrupt taking stands totally different than what they purposed when they were in power just to gain some votes from traders. SAD!

lol what a joke``especially someone quotes the basic rule of investment which is the return, as India is the worst performer of the bunch with its shrinking currency and inflated economy, should i say another peice for mental masturbation?

seriously 1 trillion`! i'd believe 1 billion.. or maybe its foreign institutional investment aiming to $ucking india's economy to the bottom just how they did in 80s Japan and late 90s in south east asian countries?

So March 2012 is when they will first start "discussing" it?

The headline makes it sound like it has already been decided, but it has not even been discussed yet.
