Tell you my personal experience , I was heading toward Alberta , CA by road for fun took a local route at evening was looking for shelter in Montana... saw motel sign, drive in ..first moment smell of PARATHA all over , me and my friends surprise ,,,what the fvck this desi smell in the middle of nowhere... when to counter guess......what , patel with his wife and little kid having evening party..... A dreamland for Indian in the middle of nowhere.
Where you find the cheapest foods, you'll find these lower class Indian folks hang around having it.
I have heard accounts from friends that sometimes middle class Indians can complete a dinner with one roti/chapatti and taking bites from a raw onion in between. Aloo is the ingredient of most Indian cuisine because it's cheap as chips. No smell or clue of any protein anywhere, cause it costs money. Even if they could eat meat like mutton, they have a heart attack buying it in the markets...
This is a butt of many a Bangladesh joke...
