US tanks arrive in Germany to help Nato defences

The largest shipment of US brigades since the fall of the Soviet Union is arriving in northern Germany.

The first of the 87 tanks and 144 military vehicles were being unloaded in the port of Bremerhaven on Friday.

The equipment and 3,500 US troops are to be deployed along Nato's eastern frontier. The deployment aims to allay worries of potential Russian aggression in eastern Europe.

However, some fear the large number will exacerbate tensions with Moscow.

Leaders of the left-wing regional government of Brandenburg - one of the German states through which the American brigades will be transported over the next two weeks - have called for further talks with Russia.

The arrival of the equipment and troops marks the start of a new phase of the US's Operation Atlantic Resolve, which foresees the continuous presence of an American armoured brigade combat team in Europe on a nine-month rotational basis.

The new forces will gather first in Poland, then fan out across seven countries from Estonia to Bulgaria, while a headquarters unit will be stationed in Germany

Other Nato members are also increasing their presence in eastern Europe, with Britain sending fighter jets to the Black Sea area, while a battalion of troops, tanks and light armour will deploy to Estonia in the spring, backed by French and Danish troops. Germany also plans to send troops and tanks to Lithuania.

The US military continued on Sunday to unload hundreds of tanks, trucks and equipment at the northern German port of Bremerhaven as part of a build-up to deter Russia and reassure NATO allies on the eastern flank.

"Let me be clear: This is one part of our efforts to deter Russian aggression, ensure the territorial integrity of our allies and maintain a Europe that is whole, free, prosperous, and at peace," US Air Force Lieutenant General Tim Ray, deputy commander of US European Command, said in prepared remarks in Bremerhaven.

The first pieces of equipment from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division rolled off boats in Bremerhaven on Friday, while combat troops started to arrive over the weekend in Poland.

The US late last year announced it would send a third combat brigade to Europe, pre-positioning supplies and equipment and bringing in troops in back-to-back nine month rotations.

Around 3,500 soldiers, 87 tanks, 18 howitzers; 419 humvees, 144 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, 446 tracked vehicles, 907 wheeled vehicles, and 650 trailers are involved in the brigade deployment.

Bremerhaven is a central logistic point from where the equipment will be brought to staging areas and headquarters in Poland. In the beginning of February, the units will be distributed from Poland across the region, including the Baltic countries, Romania and Bulgaria. One armor regiment will also be based in Grafenwöhr, Germany, for training and maintenance.

The US military and NATO said they were seeking to boost inter-operability and combat readiness to be able to quickly respond to renewed threats following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and Moscow's hybrid warfare in eastern Ukraine.

NATO members Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia - each with large ethnic Russian minorities - are particularly worried Russia could intervene directly or indirectly in their countries as Moscow did in Ukraine. The deployment comes less than two weeks before Donald Trump takes over the White House as US president. His friendly comments towards Russia and questioning of NATO have caused concern among NATO members in eastern Europe.

Germany, Canada and Britain are also sending a rotating battalion each to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Ray said the armor combat brigade deployment was only a part of a larger deterrent force that included equipment in "space, cyberspace, the air and sea." He added that the nearly 70,000 US troops in Europe were adapting to new strategic realities, including Russian aggression, migration and Islamic radicalism.

The 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team will participate in several training missions with NATO allies, including the large Saber Guardian 17 NATO exercise in July in the Black Sea region. It will be replaced by a new brigade next September.

Little fun fact about this news.

3d Armoured BCT, 4th Infantry Division should have a strength of 4,500 soldier in their TO&E. With 5 Battalions/Squadron and 2 supporting Battalions. The news source saying there are only 3,500 strong mean they mostly leave an Infantry Battalion behind and deployed as a pure Armoured Bridage.

It's unit was commanded by 2 famous general during WW2. Capt. Eisenhower is an instructor for the 301 Heavy Tank Squadron which make up the 3BCT/4 ID. General Patton is the commanding officer of 304 Heavy Tank Squadron

Have a lot of "First" within the Units in the Brigade, 10 Cavalry is the first African American unit assemble during AMerican Civil War, 66th Armoured Regiment is the oldest (hence first) heavy tank unit in service.

False comparison. Neither country is part of a military alliance, that allows one memberstate to call on other memberstates fo protection. Also, US has cordial relations with Nicaragua and US-Cuba relations have not only normalized but greatly improved in recent years, as evidence by e.g. opening embassies. So, neither country faces a threat similar to that which the Baltics states perceive, and which is the reason the Baltic states have asked for assistance from their NATO allies in establishing a credible defence . There also isn't a land border with the US.

The defense isn't improved primarily by the presence of an extra couple of tanks, but rather by the presence of allied forces in situ (i.e. can't strike of invade these small countries without also risking a direct confrontation with larger NATO countries).
