NEW DELHI: At a time when incorrect India maps are getting the goat of not just the government but also journalists, there is even more alarming news for India's strategic community. The official website of US department of state, which handles foreign relations of the country, shows *** as part of Pakistan, notwithstanding India's claim over the region.

Under its A-Z list of countries, the website (U.S. Department of State), which has the catch line 'Diplomacy in Action', carries profiles and maps of all countries with which the US has diplomatic relations. In the case of India, however, the map differs from the official Indian map in that it completely ignores India's claim over *** by not even acknowledging its disputed status.

Surprisingly, in the case of Aksai Chin region in the north which shares a boundary with China and is currently occupied by Beijing, the map carries a pointer which does mention 'Indian claim'. It's only in the case of *** where it fails to take note of its disputed status and India's position.

"It shows a distinct pro-Pakistan cartographic tilt that is inconsistent with the UN projection of the entire *** (including Gilgit-Baltistan) as disputed,'' strategic affairs expert Brahma Chellaney said.

Former chief of joint intelligence committee and security expert S D Pradhan said the US needs to be careful about Indian sensitivities, particularly at a time when the two countries are working as strategic partners. "These maps do not reflect *** either as a disputed area or as Indian territory and it's important that these inaccuracies are brought to the notice of people. This also reflects USA's soft policy towards Pakistan despite their knowledge that Pakistan Army and ISI are maintaining close links with terrorists and Taliban,'' Pradhan said.

In the Pakistan map on the same website, *** is shown as neatly ensconced in Pakistan with nothing to suggest its disputed status.

India has in the past had the same problem with organizations like Google but this is probably the first time that such an inaccuracy has come to light on a US government website. The common practice now among international news portals, like in the case of BBC, is to refer to the two sides of LoC as India-controlled Kashmir and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.

In fact, in the recent past, most such cases of faulty Indian maps were reported from India's eastern border where Arunachal Pradesh was shown as part of China by private companies. In one such case recently, the Chinese ambassador to India Zhang Yan got into an altercation with an Indian journalist after the latter objected to the state being shown in China in a private firm's brochure.

. . . .
Pakistan would be happy if you go on and raise the kashmir issue!

Do it ASAP brah!

Do you think they dont know 'Kasmir issue' ? GOI may raise this issue with US, if they are not OK with *** being in Pakistan and LOC being the permanent border .

.
India should approach UN immediately and raise the case of Kashmir!

UN.... an organization without any direction. It cannot even bring some semblance to its General Assembly. It is far fetched even to think its ability to solve Kashmir.

.
US acknowledges Kashmir is part of Pakistan and Aksai Chin/Arunachal Pradesh is part of China, glad to hear.

I agree.... its name should be changed to UNable.

Unless India can convince the world's major nations that Kashmir should be part of India, the people of Kashmir should have self determination. The people must be able to decide on whether be with India, Pakistan or have its own nation. The only exception is if India can convince other nations that Kashmir belongs to India, which is unlikely to happen.

Not UN. India should lodge a protest to US. Hopefully they will correct themselves.

U.S. never took India's side over Pakistan on the Kashmir issue.

They do include Azad Kashmir as part of Pakistan, and they show India Occupied Kashmir as part of India. They have been doing this for years so why did India finally decided to write an article about it.

They also have dotted line as Line of Control on the Map. So are you Indians refusing to accept the fact that there is a Line of Control between the two sides of Kashmir?

Please indian media, GROW UP.

Azad Kashmir 'Is' part of Pakistan. Last time i was there, i saw Pakistani flag flying high, not Indian.

The Pakistani flag even flys high in Indian Occupied Kashmir

"In Lal Chowk (Indian Occupied J&K) even today flag of Pakistan is being hoisted.” said Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha national president Anurag Thakur

Its becuase its part of Pakistan simply now get over it and stop crying as always .

We are over it, it's just some of the people east of our border who live in a democratic but delusional world.

This is one thing I cannot agree with the Indian government. Why do our maps not even show a azad Kashmir as a territory occupied by pak ? It is just dishonest to not let us know what the real situation is. The Indian govt is not even claiming that area. So it wouldn't hurt to be more truthful
