WASHINGTON - The US Pacific Command has for the first time developed a schedule for naval patrols in the South China Sea, with freedom of navigation operations (FONOPS) two or three times over the next few months, a report said on Friday (Sept 1), quoting unnamed US officials.

This would mark a considered approach to FONOPS in the disputed South China Sea, the Wall Street Journal reported. China claims the maritime zone virtually in its entirety, but Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan also have claims there.

China has called previous FONOPS by the US provocative. There have been three so far under President Donald Trump, and four under the previous Barack Obama administration.

China reacted sharply to a US patrol on July 2, when the American destroyer USS Stethem passed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island in the Paracels chain.

The destroyer had “trespassed” China’s territorial waters, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “China dispatched military vessels and fighter planes in response to warn off the US vessel,” spokesman Geng Shuang added.

But Admiral Harry Harris, chief of the US Pacific Command, has publicly favoured more FONOPS.

The last such operation was conducted on Aug 10 near Mischief Reef, one of several features in the Spratlys chain that had been fortified by China. In that operation, the destroyer USS John McCain was accompanied by two P-8 Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft, officials told the Wall Street Journal, adding that air support may be a regular feature of future FONOPS.

Notwithstanding an apparently warm start to the personal relationship between President Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping, China and the US are still feeling their way in a relationship which under Mr Trump, has become prickly over the issue of trade and North Korea.

The US wants to cut its trade deficit with China, and also wants Beijing to lean on North Korea to pressure the Pyongyang regime to curb its nuclear and missile programmes – and Mr Trump has linked the two issues.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Vietnam objected to Chinese drills in the Gulf of Tonkin, just north of the South China Sea. In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Thi Thu Hang said “Vietnam proposes China to cease and refrain from repeating acts that complicate the situation in the East Sea (South China Sea).”

China on Friday responded by urging Vietnam to maintain a calm and rational approach, Reuters reported. In July, China had pressured Hanoi to suspend oil drilling in waters also claimed by China.

Schedule for patrols? lol what is big deal about that and what will make any difference? the more often US navy come, the more PLA preparation and sense of readiness shall be and the more we will add military strength in SCS because PLA will assesse US threat and find the solution accordingly, this is like some animal live near snake, they will eventually immunized itself against Snake poison, the more US come the better is for PLA navy.

. .
China just defeated a US plan Doklam where India was visibly on the wrong side of argument trying to "defend Bhutan" without being asked. If China had attached India, USA would've jumped up and placed itself in the region, possibly in Bhutan in the name of securing its territory against China.

And after that plan didn't work, USA is now trying to offend China from a different side.

Then I'm sure the CCP won't cry about the US presence anymore.

In reality, the US military operates in China's near abroad on a daily basis, and is effectively denying China's ability to control it.

With so many accidents happened to USN in recent months you sure there are enough to effectively do its job while more ships need to head back home for repairs?

The US has 87 commissioned destroyers/cruisers and rising. Accidents happen and are currently being investigated to correct any shortcoming. A couple accidents aren't going to stop the US Navy from patrolling the Western Pacific. They're making that clear with these increased operations.

Then after that, what next?
china already has built islands now they will start drilling for oil and take what they want. This whole idea of half measures by US will only fool the idiots like japan or korea.

Sooner or later countries will end up agreeing to china. Philippines already has done that.
Against NK there is lot of bluster but no action. Its high time US took some action or pack their bags from south east asia.

.
LOL more photos of USN destroyers each escorted by multiple PLAN destroyers with PLAAF buzzing overhead to follow.

Morons do not know this order is actually a de-escalation because Trump expressly disallowed more than one USN ship on each mission, making each mission merely whimpers and cries not any real dangerous provocation.

.
Strategically, Trump needs to go hard on home-based neoliberal and minority traitors and their media only.

To fuse off and depressurize the angry whites, he makes some symbolic but inconclusive gestures like in the OP or the anti- North Korea angry tweets.

Trump build up a mighty clan which will crown US' crony (semi) democracy.

Angry tweet jihad has made the US look funnily weak.
